The Reptile House is a WPA era building and was dedicated in 1934. It features Moorish and Spanish influences, and was built with repurposed brick, stone and lumber from abandoned structures including the Milburn Wagon Works, the Wabash Railroad shops, and the locks from the defunct Miami and Erie Canal. Pictured here is an Argentine giant tegu who meandered up to the glass and gave us a big look at his omnivorous mouth. Tegus are generally considered pests in their native habitat, as they are known to raid chicken coops to feed on both eggs and fowl. Argentine tegus, though, can also make good pets, as they have a tendency to become attached to their owners and are generally quite docile.
