Oita Prefecture must see attractions

1. Hells of Beppu

The Hells of Beppu are a set of eight outdoor hot springs in picturesque natural surroundings. Spread out across the Shibaseki and Kannawa districts of northern Beppu, these steamy thermal basins are for viewing only. Enjoy desserts prepared using the steam of the hot springs at some of these so-called “hells.”

2. Takegawara Onsen

The Takegawara Onsen is a hot spring spa with a stylish Japanese façade and traditional baths. Still active today, the public bathhouse provides a glimpse into the Beppu of the late 19th century, when its tiled roof was made of thatched wood and bamboo. From thrilling rides to child-friendly attractions and live entertainment, there’s something for visitors of all ages at Kijima Kogen Park. Enjoy one of Japan’s most famous roller coasters, navigate your way through a spooky maze, go ice-skating and cool off at a splash pad. Kijima Kogen Park spreads across 62 acres (25 hectares) of a forested mountain slope, with glimpses of Mount Tsurumi in the background.

4. Kinrin Lake

When mist creates a cloud over the surface of the warm water, Kinrin Lake seems like a portal to another world, suffused with a potent magic. Fed by a volcanic spring at its base and other springs whose cooler streams pour in, the lake stays warm year round with the same geothermal energy that feeds the onsen baths throughout Yufuin. Knowing how it works doesn’t make it any less magical in early morning, when the contrast between hot water and cold air creates the lake’s signature fog. Start the day here to be full of the relaxing energy that makes Yufuin such a popular destination.

5. Beppu Tower

An impressive entanglement of rods and poles, the Beppu Tower is a modern skyscraper rising above Beppu Bay. Near the top is a deck providing views of the picturesque strand and the rest of the city. Ride the elevator up to the observation deck and get an aerial view of your favorite attractions in Beppu.
