Mission district is amazing for food and nightlife. Stayed here because of that. Made a mistake roaches and bugs in the room. Crackheads in parking lot break on to your car (no security)

Keep your standards low and it's not so bad

It was an adequately clean room in perhaps one of the worst parts of San Francisco so I expected worse but it wasnt great either. Better than expected but wouldn't choose to stay there again. $250 deposit was ridiculous

Horror hotel

Did not understand the concept of a service dog. The lady working there was very rude about everything especially the service dog concept. The stairs going up were totally wet and our service dog slipped and rolled down about 5 steps and management did not show any concern. Small room with no television and someone was yelling off the balcony at all times of the night right next to us. Had to pay $250 dollar deductible fee besides room cost. Horrible place.

Only for budget trip, and only for a guy

First of all, check San Francisco crime map. This hotel is located right in the middle of red area. Although the hotel itself is ok, the surrounding environment is somewhat scary: apparently jobless/homeless people are standing/sitting/lying every 10 meters on the street even though it was still cold winter of February. There are random yelling outside through the night. I think it is fine for a guy since after all no major crime occurred nearby, but a lady will surely find the place around much uncomfortable. During my 1-week stay, 2 hotel staff were in charge at the front desk; one was kind and the other was not, although both of them immediately did what I insisted (printing receipts, and reloading a toilet paper roll). The heater in the room was supposed to turn on automatically at low temperature, and yes it did, but only at an extreme cold. The bed blanket was too thin and I always felt cold as I woke up every morning. As the switch of the heater is controlled centrally, you can't turn heater on at your own will (turning off is possible). There is no cooler or air-con. Only fans. I do not recommend you to open the window for the safety reason. Apart from those warnings, there are some good points as well. The location was fairly convenient. A bus stop is just ~ 20 meters away and a couple of bus routes directly take you to the city center, or the northern bay area. Also, only 5 minutes walk takes you to BART station. There are lots of nice bars and restaurants nearby

This hotel is not for the picky traveler. I was in one of the rooms that has the private bathrooms and I found it basically to be what I needed. Bathroom was clean. The towels smell like Clorox. The bed was comfortable. The area was not the best but there was plenty of little restaurants and bars and stores to meet my needs. This is a hotel and also is a residential building. It was near the BART and walking distance to many places I needed to get to. If you are laid-back and not picky this hotel may meet your needs. Just get the room that has the bathroom in it.

I didn't stay in property. The property was completely misleading. Expedia shows only pictures of beds and top 2 stories of building. I don't care about graffiti or homeless but there gangs in area a and am sure they would have broken into my rental. When I examined property I was buzzed upstairs like in a prison cell. This property is shameful for Expedia to support. Had the pictures shown on site no one, not just me, no one would stay there. I have pictures to prove.

VERY Affordable. One day it was in 90s. No AC. Had to switch fans. Next day in 70s. No AC needed. Loved the area. Diverse. Lots of mass transit available and easy to use. La Gaza is a great spot to eat. But only open to 2pm. :(. Overall good value, but for sure no Hilton.

I have stayed at this hotel several times before the pandemic. Before it was fantastic and the staff were very polite. Under this new management it was like pulling teeth just to get a new roll of toilet paper. The hallways consistently smelled of urine, children were running around after hours in the staff never paid attention. I found several cockroaches in my bathroom and I've never seen that before in the 10 years I have been to this hotel. I would like a little bit of compensation.

Totally fine for what it is

I wasn't expecting much out of this hotel and it vastly exceeded my expectations. I'd come to San Francisco for a family gathering and my Airbnb host had to cancel at the last minute, so it was a mad scramble to find a hotel I could afford that wasn't in an awful location and which had a private bathroom. There was one private-bathroom room left at El Capitan and I booked it even with the awful reviews of it, and I figured worst case I'd have to scramble to find something else and file a dispute with my credit card. And I'm happy to say I needed to do none of that. The room was clean, with no signs of bedbugs (even with the most thorough check I've done in my life) or cockroaches. Sure, the decor was dated and there were some things that were falling apart. And okay the TV didn't work and the wifi sucked, and I had to sleep with earplugs because my room was facing Mission Street and the single-pane windows didn't block any sound. But the room was safe and clean and I had somewhere to sleep for a week, and it only cost me $80/night, which is an absolute steal most places and unheard of in San Francisco, currently the most expensive city in the entire country. Would it have been nice if the sink didn't drip? Sure. Would it have been lovely if there were an elevator for my mobility-impaired ass? Absolutely. I hope I’m never in a situation where I need to stay here ever again, but it was a perfectly fine room for an amazing price and it served its purpose for me.
