Appreciate the beauty of this colonial city tucked away in the Chiapas highlands. Discover indigenous cultures, excellent museums and stunning architecture.

San Cristóbal de las Casas is characterized by its beautiful pastel-colored colonial architecture. Be transported to a different era as you wander along cobbled streets lined with grand buildings that date back to the Spanish conquest of Chiapas. Mayan cultural influence is also evident. The city is a wonderful place to meet indigenous people from the surrounding highlands, buy traditional crafts and learn more about centuries-old local customs.

Start your explorations in the Central Zone or Historic Area in the heart of the city. The leafy Plaza 31 de Marzo makes a good starting point. Near the square you will find some of the most impressive colonial buildings. These include the vivid yellow Cathedral of Saint Christopher and Los Portales.

North of the city center is the 16th-century Church of Santo Domingo. Meander along the streets around the temple and convent, which come to life in a burst of color when the Handicrafts Market sets up. Find all types of traditional clothes, shoes, baskets and jewelry here.

Learn about the fascinating history of the Mayans. Appreciate the intricacy of the pieces at the Mesoamerican Museum of Jade and discover the significance of this gemstone in ancient cultures. No place is more dedicated to the preservation of Mayan culture than Casa Na Bolom, a cultural museum with thousands of archives, photographs and cultural relics.

Nestled in the highlands of Chiapas, San Cristóbal de las Casas is beautifully picturesque. The abundant nature just beyond the city offers a variety of daytrips, from visiting traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages to exploring wild national parks. The closest airport, Ángel Albino Corzo International, is about a 1-hour drive away. Consider long-distance buses from towns and cities including Cancún and Oaxaca too. The best way to get around the town is on foot. You will also find taxis, combis (collective minibuses) and bicycles to rent.
