Double-booked, stranded with my two kids, late-night...
The property was double-booked. I didn't even know that was possible.
When we arrived at the property, it was 10:30 pm and I'd just driven 7 hours with my two kids. The provided door code didn't work, someone that lives in the building finally let us in after 20 minutes of attempts and multiple unanswered calls to the host... we went upstairs where the second door code failed, only to learn upon knocking, that there was already someone in our unit!
If you haven't been to Newark, it's congested, traffic is aggressive, and it's a intimidating at night... but luckily, and thank god, the people are friendly and happy to help. That is the only thing that saved this "double-booking" disaster. We ended up spending way more than planned, more than I could afford, to stay at a nearby hotel for the duration of our trip.
So I can't speak to the cleanliness of the property, and the host did refund the payment immediately, but once in awhile, an apology isn't sufficient. This felt like one of those times.
