Mission of San Jose

Mission of San Jose showing signage and a church or cathedral
In the heart of the town of San José del Cabo find this picturesque church, which has a rich history and many traditional art pieces.

The Iglesia de San José (Saint Joseph Church) is commonly known as Misión de San José, because the first church ever created in the area was founded by a Jesuit missionary in the 18th century. See the charming colonial building and admire its simple, yet beautiful, works of art. Visit the central meeting point of religious life in San José del Cabo and discover a place with great historic importance.

The church is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. Its picturesque structure has a very traditional architectural style. The Misión de San José del Cabo Añuití was created in 1730 by the Jesuit Nicolas Tamaral. Four years later the priest was killed by an uprising of the Pericúes Indians, who were fighting against unfair conditions. Look closely at the beautiful white and yellow façade of the church to discover a mosaic depicting scenes of the rebellion.

No elements of the original structure of the mission remain. The building that you now see, a traditional church in very good condition, was built in 1940. Notice the two bell towers and nice arch windows.

Wander inside to discover a humble and peaceful place where most weddings and baptisms of the town are celebrated. Big beams support the ceiling while colorful mosaics decorate the floor. Elegant chandeliers and the beautiful stained-glass windows complete the setting. Check out the traditional chapels, some adorned with flowers and religious sculptures.

The church celebrates Mass every day and is the main place of worship for the people of San José del Cabo. Visitors are welcome. The Mass is often conducted in Spanish and English. If you wish to learn more about the church’s interesting history, look for the informative plaques located on the outside area.

Find the Iglesia de San José in the downtown district of San José del Cabo. It’s located just opposite Plaza Central, the main square of the town.
