The photos don't do this ryokan justice. We had a semi-western room and it was very large (even compared to other ryokans) - so big it even has a little corridor. Room and overall facilities were quite modern. Dinner and breakfast was excellent. Private onsens require booking and a 1000JPY fee which is ok but half board for my 2 year old child at 5500JPY was quite steep considering what they served (and options are limited given the amount of raw food for dinner).

Perfect 10 for this Ryokan!
Highly recommended. Room was spacious and very comfortable. Gender specific onsen on the property was fabulous. There is a private onsen availble for booking at a fee of 1000 yen for 45 minutes if you wish. Half board includes Japanese breakfast and dinner which was served in a private cubicle. Amazing experience.

Beautiful onset with views into the woods. Comfortable rooms with excellent service. Recommend breakfast and dinner at the ryokan as there is not much to eat at those hours in the town.

Stunning ryokan tucked away in the mountains, but still only a 10 minute walk from the main onsen town. Super friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful rocky outdoor onsen with sulphuric minerals. Clean and spacious tatami room, and delicious Japanese style breakfast set. Would definitely stay again!

Friendly hotel ,great shuttle services from bus station for pick up and drop off. Bigger and newly room . Great breakfast ! Dinner was good too. The hotel located in deep inside area not with hotels on the busy tourist street but quite and enjoyable. Outdoor onsen was good not not so big.

Rooms and facilities are a bit dated but staffs were friendly and foreigner friendly. In a quiet area a short walk from the main street where most of the other ryokans and some restaurants and shops are located. Additional charges for the private onsen so we did not use it. The public onsen has an indoor and outdoor section for both the male and female side and is only open from 7am-9.30am and from 3pm to 9.30pm. We feel it’s too short especially at night. Perhaps the night opening could be extended. We also found a lot of white floating particles in the water. They looked like something from the source and not dirts but wasn’t pleasant to see. Management should really looked into this.

Excellent service from the hotel. Very friendly and patient staff, always ready to help out despite the language barrier. The room we stayed was very clean and comfy. Loved the onsen. The hotel provides transfer to and from the bus stop as well.

What’s not to like.
We had a wonderful stay here. The family run Ryokan always went the extra mile and helped us plan our itinerary. The location, rooms, service and food were excellent. We were sad that we were unable to stay here for the 2 nights.

The staff was very kind and our room was nice! They sent us a message before how to get to the ryokan, since there had been problems. The ryokan is on top of a small hill, so the other ryokan and baths are a few minutes by walking, but totally okat. Just a notice that there are very few restaurants open for dinner, so if you can, book dinner and breakfast at the ryokan. it is much easier.

Conveniently located ryokan which is immaculate and has friendly staff. Nice rotenburo too. Kurokawa has many great hot spring baths and is set in a beautiful location.

Horrendous Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Ichinoi
I booked 2 rooms (each meant for 3 guests) and 1 Japanese style room (meant for 4 guests) for a travelling party of 8. 2 kids occupied the Japanese style room with one set of grandparents. The hotel charged me for an entire room (for 2 additional guests occupying the Japanese style room) without telling me the additional amount at the time of check in. They only told me at the time of check out. I could have booked an additional room and collected another night on hotels.com if I have been told at the time of check in. It is bad service on the part of the hotel. At the time of check in, the hotel was prompt to pick up the luggage from the car. Yet, at the time of check out, we have to carry the luggage to the car ourselves. Pretentious service. The hotel does not offer dinner without prior reservation. They recommended a restaurant run by 2 ladies who doesn't speak English and they claimed that the restaurant serves Wagyu beef - the restaurant does not and the beef was the worst I have eaten in Japan - tough as leather. I asked for 4 bowls at the restaurant and they promptly served 4 additional sets of food. It's ridiculous. This was the worst hotel stay in Kyushu during my 3 weeks holiday.

Horrendous Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Ichinoi
I booked 2 rooms (each meant for 3 guests) and 1 Japanese style room (meant for 4 guests) for a travelling party of 8. We had 2 kids sleep with 1 set of grandparents in the Japanese style room while 2 persons occupied each room meant for 3 guests. Yet the hotel charged us an rate equal to a fourth room for having 2 "additional" guests in the Japanese style room. I could have booked another room if that's the case and would have earned another free night at hotels.com. The hotel should make up its mind - either charge based on per head or per room, not both. There is no dinner at the hotel if you don't book in advance. In the end, they recommended a restaurant run by 2 old ladies who speak no English and overcharged us by giving us 4 additional sets of food when I only wanted 4 additional bowls. That was the worst meal in my 3 weeks holiday in Kyushu and this was the worst hotel stay as well. It's daylight robbery.

Enjoyable 2 night stay. Love the onsen, it's well-maintained, with all the necessary amenities. The Ryokan is a little uphill 5 min walk from the main Street. Personally think it's great for people who like privacy.

A restful night
I really like ryokan Ichinoi because of it remoteness which is a little further up Kurosawa. You’ll need to drive up a narrow road to get up there so you won’t find big bus tours there. So quiet and peaceful. I slept so well that night. I tried the private bath as well and it’s well worth the extra price. Service and food are exceptional. The only thing to be aware is that therer is a flight of stairs between hotel lobby and guest rooms and there is no elevator. But they do help you with your luggage. All in all I am very happy with my stay.

The best Onsen Ryokan I ever been
The place is super nice but you need to have a good driving skills to get there. A small size SUV can barely get into the road. The food in the place were wonderful and with very reasonable price, I would recommend to try at least once for breakfast and dinner. Also, if you have any special request for the food, you better tell them 1-2 days in advance unless they would say no to you. The wifi connection was bad, you cannot even watch youtube with 360p, so please expect no outside connection during your stay.

Our stay at Ryokan Ichinoi was great.The hotel staffs were polite and extremely helpful as they helped us to rebook the bus since we have to change our plan a little bit. The location was also good, with easy access to the onsen town.

Nice Ryokan with super friendly staff
We had an amazing time in Ryokan Ichinoi. The Japanese-style room was extremely nice! The Onsen as well! The best part were the super friendly staff/owners. When we weren't finding a dinner place in Kurokawa, they phoned restaurants and drove us to them. They will also pick guests up from the bus stop so no-one needs to carry luggage up the short way. We can very much recommend this Ryokan.

Traditional Japanese ryokan in the mountains
We had a two night stay and loved this place. Got the room with breakfast and evening meal. Great food (and they adjusted the menu for my partner who isn't so keen on fish). Onsen on site, they give you yukata you can wander around in. Staff are very friendly, although English is limited. Beautiful area, the drive through Aso national park to Beppu is highly recommended! Top tip - google maps sends you on a stupid route to get there. Just put in the town centre and follow the signs from there. The road up to the hotel is pretty steep and narrow but there is plenty of space in the car park once you get up there.

Let me just start with applauding the amazing service we have received during our stay at Ryokan Ichinoi. The staff were all very eager to help and to give us the best experience. We truly felt like important clients for them, and they made us feel very welcome and comfortable. The room was as expected very large and comfy, with a great view of the forest. The kaiseki dinner and the traditional japanese breakfast were amazing each time, with fresh ingredients and balanced. We tried the private onsen in this ryokan for a reasonable fee and we bought the onsen pass to try the other onsens in the village. Each places had its perks so I would recommend anyone visiting Kurokawa to get the pass! All in all, it was a relaxing stay. We would love to go back one day and we're recommending this establishment to all friends and family.

We had a wonderful onsen experience in this Ryoken. The staff were very helpful and friendly. They made our experience all the more enjoyable. The traditional Japanese rooms were comfortable and the breakfast delicious.

Nice onsen Ryokan
A very nice Ryokan with beautiful onsens on a small hill slope hidden away from the group of other busy ones. Rooms are clean and tidy.The boss and all staffs are very nice and whole heartily to help with every detail to make our stay a very wonderful one. We enjoyed very much and definitely will come back to Ryokan ichinoi when we visit Kurosawa in the future.

Very Special Place on the Hill
Charming place in the very special location, on top of the heel. Thus, if you have problems climbing a hill and have no car, please be aware. Surrounded by lushes greenery. Very comfortable Japanese style room with wonderful futons and bedding. Onsen itself is very beautiful, although we found that mineral waters were somewhat too hot for us. This is the case with all hot springs in the area. We were not able to use them as we were hoping in comparison to hot springs temperature in other mineral springs resorts we had visited in the past e.g., Abano Therme in Italy, Desert Hot Springs in California etc.
