Argentina
Catena Zapata Winery featuring drinks or beverages and views

Vineyards and wineries decorate the fields of Argentina’s most famous wine region, an area of picturesque terrain.

Mendoza is a scenic region with an eclectic terrain made up of mountains, valleys, lakes and vineyards. The mountains of the Andes mark the Chilean border and the western point of the province. Try the intensely flavored red wine made from the acclaimed malbec grape that grows in the highlands here.

Visit the eponymous capital city of Mendoza, which is the heart of Argentina’s wine industry. Among the city’s main attractions is General San Martín Park, which has stunning grounds with palm trees and a lake. In the city’s downtown area you will find cultural buildings, such as the Municipal Museum of Modern Art and the Teatro Independencia, which surround the central Independence Square.

Take a tour of some of the wineries, such as the Bodega Norton, Bodega Giol and Bodega La Rural. Other notable bodegas are the Pulenta Estate Winery and the Lagarde Winery, both located in the city’s southern outskirts. Hear how the first wine vines were planted in Argentina in the 16th century. Learn about the famous malbec, cabernet sauvignon and merlot of the area.

Bring the kids to the Mendoza Zoo or embark on a thrilling SkyTour to paraglide above the seemingly endless fields of vineyards.

Spend time visiting the quaint surrounding towns, such as Malargüe, where fascinating rock formations grow in the Witches Cave. Other villages include Tunuyan and Uspallata, where you can ski at the Los Penitentes Ski Resort.

Expect sunny and dry weather among the glorious green fields of the region. Note that many businesses close at noon due to the intense heat of summer days. The temperatures drop in winter, making for mild days and cool evenings.

Sandwiched between the provinces of San Juan to the north and Neuquén further south, Mendoza is close to the Chilean border on the Cuyo region on the western flank of Argentina. Ride a bus west for 15 hours from Buenos Aires or fly to El Plumerillo airport near the city of Mendoza.

A trip to Mendoza offers trails through majestic valleys, visits to cultural highlights and peaceful afternoons at vineyards.
