Explore the Parque Nacional de Garajonay (Garajonay National Park), a UNESCO site since 1986. It covers about one-tenth of the island with evergreen subtropical forest known as laurisilva (laurel rainforest). Follow hiking trails around the park to discover spectacular natural scenery with waterfalls, peaks, thousands of species of plants and many different types of animals. Some birds are unique to the Canary Islands, including the beautiful pigeons paloma rabiche and paloma turqué. Climb to the highest peak Alto de Garajonay and marvel at the stunning view of the entire island and distant islands of La Palma, El Hierro and Tenerife.
San Sebastián de La Gomera is the island ’s capital and main port. Sunbathe on its famous black-sand beaches and see historic buildings, such as the picturesque tower Torre del Conde and the Christopher Columbus museum Casa de Colón. Columbus stayed in this same building in 1492 before departing on the voyage leading to his discovery of America.
Stop at Hermigua, a town with several lovely beaches and a beautiful natural swimming pool. Nearby find another small town called Agulo, surrounded by spectacular mountains. Explore the green valley Vallehermoso and take stunning photos of the eroded volcano peak Roque Cano (Cano Rock) and the cliff resembling church organ pipes Los Órganos. Visit Valle Gran Rey, a former hippy commune, now one of the island’s main tourist attractions.
Reach La Gomera by ferry from the port Los Cristianos in southern Tenerife. From here arrange a daytrip tour to the island. Another option is getting a plane from Tenerife. To move around the island, use local buses or taxis or rent a car. You’ll find car rental companies right next to San Sebastián port. Book in advance to guarantee availability.
