Kaaresuvanto

Travel Guide
Kaaresuvanto
Experience authentic Sámi traditions amid stunning wilderness scenery at this village located on the northern border of Finland and Sweden.

Visit the village of Kaaresuvanto for outdoor adventures within the desolate beauty of Lapland. Go trout fishing, hiking, skiing and snowmobiling in a countryside of arctic forests, lakes and rivers. Kaaresuvanto sits on the banks of the Muonio River, which marks the border between Finland and Sweden. A bridge connects the village with Kaaresuando, a Swedish village that according to Finnish customs is one part of an entire locality.

Kaaresuvanto is a destination for lovers of the outdoors and its major attractions lie within its immediate environs. Arrange your excursions with tour operators or travel independently via rented car. Learn about the Lapland War, fought between Finland and Germany during World War II, at the Järämä Fortifications. Fish for salmon on rivers such as the Muonio River, Könkämä River and Lätäseno River.

Drive 90 minutes north to the Malla Strict Nature Reserve, where zigzagging trails present excellent hiking and cross-country skiing opportunities. The reserve is home to the Three Nations’ Border Point, the convergence of Finland, Norway and Sweden. Hike and ride snowmobiles to viewpoints in nearby Saana Fell and the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area. Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre has exhibitions and information about all of these popular tourist areas.

Another nice place to visit about a 1-hour drive east is Hetta. Browse exhibits about the nomadic existence of the Sámi people and diversity of Lapland at the Fell-Lapland Nature Centre. Gaze over the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park from Jyppyrä Lookout.

Reach Kaaresuvanto by flying to Enontekiö Airport and then take a taxi. Alternatively, fly to Kiruna Airport in Sweden and rent a car from there.

Located in Finland’s far north, Kaaresuvanto witnesses several extraordinary natural spectacles. From late May until mid-July the midnight sun creates days without nights. Kaarevaara, a mountain on the Swedish side of the Muonio River, is a superb vantage point for this. Spot the dancing lights of the aurora borealis between November and April.
