While Incheon has been populated for nearly 2,000 years, this southern neighborhood has been under development only since the late 20th century.

Songdo International City is a remarkable sustainably designed community southwest of South Korea’s huge city of Incheon and capital of Seoul. Come here to Songdo to enjoy cultural and outdoor attractions or learn about the concept of an international “smart city.”

The city is built on land reclaimed from the sea, with the overarching intent of providing a place where people can live, work and play in close proximity. Notice the attractive housing and office buildings and beautiful seawater park. Out of sight are state-of-the-art systems for trash collection, telecommunications and environmental building design.

Relax each day in Songdo Central Park. Wander along the promenade past a variety of sculptures: whimsical, ancient and modern. Deer and rabbits live in habitats along the seawater canal. Rent a canoe to paddle along the canal. Alternatively, ride in a water taxi or cruise boat.

Notice the interesting Tri-Bowl building with the appearance of three rice bowls floating on water. Step inside to see temporary art exhibits or attend a cultural event. For an excellent view of Songdo, the ocean and Incheon, visit the Sky Garden on the 29th floor of G-Tower, which hosts IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone) Authority offices.

Stop at Compact Smart City to view a fascinating movie on Incheon’s history and a scale model of the city. Next door is a helpful tourist information center. Because Songdo is so new, it remains under development. Get up-to-date information on hotels, restaurants and cultural attractions to help plan your days.

Bicycle along Songdo’s 30-mile-long (50-kilometer) Bicycle Road. Stop at Michuhol Park and learn ancient rituals and Korean cooking at hands-on demonstrations in its Daryewon building. Let kids enjoy the outside playground. Other Songdo attractions include the NC Cube Canal Walk shopping arcade and Sunrise Park. See the campus of SUNY Korea, South Korea’s first U.S. university, established in 2012.

Reach Songdo easily over the Incheon Bridge, connecting Songdo directly to Incheon International Airport.
