Huntsville Botanical Garden

Huntsville Botanical Garden featuring a garden
Marvel at the colorful diversity of nature at these award-winning gardens, which feature thousands of plant species, tranquil ponds and elegant pavilions.

The Huntsville Botanical Garden showcases the wealth of nature. Explore seven different gardens, as well as nature trails, glades and model railways, all encompassed within the site. Light displays in winter and scarecrow trails in autumn are some of the annual events that take place in this scenic location.

Enter the garden and turn past the railway, which runs through a scale-model village. The path leads to a bridge crossing over the waters of Lake Lonnie and Little Smith Lake. Near the bridge sits the Nature Center, which contains the tropical Purdy Butterfly House. Inspect the unusual wing patterns of these fluttering insects and look for frogs, quail and turtles, who also live in the lush vegetation of this seasonal habitat.

Bring the kids to the Children's Garden to enjoy a wading pool, dinosaur exhibits and water rocket clock. Let them try to escape the maze and meet their favorite characters in the Storybook Garden. Play musical instruments in the Bamboo Garden and get your hands dirty while digging in Half-Acre Wood.

For a pleasant walk, follow the Dogwood, Lewis and Mathews nature trails. During fall, the scenery is particularly beautiful as the trees of different species burst into a rainbow of colors.

The garden hosts a regular program of events, including exotic flower sales, open-air movie nights and owl shows. Check the calendar on the official website to find out what is happening during your visit. For gardening tips, consider enrolling in a workshop, which will provide advice on growing your own plants.

The Huntsville Botanical Garden is less than 20 minutes away from Huntsville International Airport and 10 minutes from the city center by car. Parking is available at the site. The nature center is open between May and September and the garden is open daily. One of the best times to go, however, is on a Thursday, when the park stays open until dusk, allowing visitors to see and photograph the plants in a different light.
