Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park

Taxco which includes caves
Venture deep underground to explore one of Mexico’s largest cave systems, where vast caverns and eerie rock formations have developed over millennia.

The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park is home to one of the largest cave systems in the world. An estimated 90 massive caves stretch deep underground. Some of these have been explored and are now open to visitors. Delve beneath the earth on a fascinating walking tour to discover the secrets that lie below.

The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park is located just outside of the charming town of Taxco, southwest of Mexico City. Join the 350,000 people who walk through the caves each year and find your inner Indiana Jones on this fun and educational adventure.

Embark on a tour of the caves with an expert guide. Tours are usually in Spanish but it is possible to request an English-speaking guide in advance. The tour begins at the Visitor Center and descends through a pretty canyon toward the Mouth of Cacahuamilpa. Many animals live in the lush wildlife so be sure to keep watch for iguanas, ocelots, badgers, armadillos and the elusive lynx. Expect to spot vivid wild orchids along the way, too.

The first cave, Chivo, is undeniably impressive. Yet this is the smallest of the caves you will visit. Be amazed at the prehistoric stalactites and stalagmites which have formed inside the cathedral-like caverns. Your guide will illuminate interesting geological formations along the way. The caverns are so large that one is even named the Auditorium and plays host to operas, events and concerts.

In addition to the cave tour, be sure to spend some time in the park itself. Visit the little Limontilla Botanical Garden to learn more about the region’s flora. There is a zip line to enjoy, a swimming pool and lots of opportunities for rappelling, rock climbing and spelunking.

The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park is located in the state of Guerrero and is a possible side trip from Mexico City. Fly into the nearest airport, Cuernacava, or take a bus from the capital. Public transportation from Taxco City will drop you at the entrance. There is a fee for the guided tour and other activities require additional fees.
