Exit Glacier

The view from Exit Glacier, the only place in Kenai Fjords #NationalPark, Alaska you can access by car. The hike is not long, but to get to the glacier requires a nimble scramble over loose rocks and gravel, making it somewhat treacherous. My first time touching a glacier! This was early July, but skies were overcast and we had a lot of rain the week we were in Alaska.

Wife and I did a hike up to face of the Exit Glacier outside of Seward, Alaska in the Kenai Fjords National Park. It is not named Exit because it is rapidly melting (which it is) but because it is where the first documented mountaineering party to cross the Harding Icefield, which feeds the glacier, in 1968 exited their trek at this glacier.
Beautiful hike on our trek up to ice climb exit glacier. If you are staying near Seward and have an adventurous soul check out some ice climbing adventures, it's a blast!
this was taken form the Top of the Cliffs a 2 mile hike up, you can go further to the Harding Ice Field. It's a steep climb so leave yourself plenty of time, but the view is amazing.#hiking

The walk is long, and worth it. So is going down to the gravel plain.

If you can walk the 8 miles to get up close, do it. We couldn't, so we saw the glacier from afar. Not a bad 1 mile hike though.

We hiked lower loop trail...you dont get very close to glacier...just enough for a picture. We hiked on Matanuska Glacier...would recommend that one and skipping Exit Glacier.

Took a cruise to tide water glacier. Saw puffins, se lions, humpback whale and orcas. Drove up the road for 8 miles from the lodge and saw Exit Glacier from close by. Park Office is at end of road and there are trails to Glacier.
