Although Paris is only a few hours away, Brittany feels worlds apart from the French capital. This is a land of history and adventure. Spend your days admiring local art in a fortified town and riding a bike along the dramatic coastline. Enjoy meandering through tiny villages and reconnecting with nature while hiking on remote trails.
From its role in civil wars to its part in the French Renaissance, Brittany has a rich cultural heritage. As you explore, listen out for British accents; visitors from the U.K. are well-represented here, with Brittany and the British Isles enjoying a longstanding connection dating back to ancient times.
If you have come to Brittany for sunshine, head for the coast. Popular sunbathing locations include the sandy shores of Plage du Pradic, also a prime spot for shellfish gathering. Walk along the dunes at Plage du Briantais in Lancieux Bay and hike along the Ploumanac’h coast to marvel at unusual pink rock formations. Other coastal activities include kayaking at Plage de Roc’h Hir near Le Trieux.
History can be found at every turn in Brittany. Visitors will find no shortage of prehistoric sites in Carnac, a village known for its collection of megalithic stones. Take a guided tour from the Maison des Mégalithes or walk or bike between the stones for a close-up view.
Visit the town of Saint-Pol-de-Léon to marvel at its 13th-century cathedral. Other historical landmarks worth seeking out include Château de Kerjean, a noble residence known for its grand Renaissance-style architecture.
Brittany is easily accessible by plane, train or car. Fly into one of Brittany’s regional airports or ride a fast train from other French regions. Ferries to Brittany also depart from the U.K. and Ireland, with ports located in Saint-Malo and Roscoff. In Brittany itself, canal tours carry visitors from Saint-Malo to Arzal and from Nantes to Brest.
Consider visiting Brittany during music festival season, which normally begins in spring and lasts into summer. During this time, oceanfront towns provide the perfect atmosphere for a party.
