Spend time in the cultural heart of Pécs, a bustling meeting place fringed by historic buildings.

Pécs’ expansive main plaza, Széchenyi Square, is the perfect place to begin exploring the city. Join tourists and locals for a stroll around this scenic square. People-watch and admire the impressive churches, museums and monuments found in and around this important social and cultural center.

Gaze up at the Trinity Column, a towering Baroque monument constructed following the end of a plague to celebrate God. See the statue of Hungarian military leader János Hunyadi on horseback, created by sculptor Pál Pátzy to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Hunyadi’s death.

Marvel at the porcelain Zsolnay Fountain, which was donated to the city by the Zsolnay Factory in 1892. Notice the fountain’s four bull’s heads are glazed with eosin, which creates an iridescent sheen in the sunlight.

Visit the numerous fascinating historical and religious buildings that surround the square. It’s impossible to miss the grand City Hall, which features a beautiful neo-Baroque exterior dating back to the early 20th century.

The Mosque of Pasha Qasim is one of the most prominent buildings found in the square. Examine its striking façade, the majority of which was constructed by the Turkish in the 16th century.

Take a break at Mecsek, a café with more than 28 different flavors of ice cream. Sit on its lovely terrace and watch the busy movement of tourists and locals through the square.

Stop by the Tourist Information Center in the square for more information about local attractions or to arrange a guided walking tour of the city. The square is often the site of major festivals and events, such as the Days of Pécs musical festival in September. Find out if anything special is taking place during your visit.

Find Széchenyi Square in Pécs’ the city center. The square is easily explored on foot. Few of the buildings around the square advertise their opening times, so it’s best to ask locally for more information when planning your visit.
