In just a few minutes, you can be in Staithes, a postcard-perfect harbour village where cottages tumble down cobbled streets to the sea, featured frequently both in TV shows and Hollywood movies. Nearby Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, and Saltburn each offer their own charm - from surfing and fossil-hunting to historic abbeys and art galleries, while Runswick Bay was a recent winner of the Sunday Times “Beach of the Year” award.

For family adventures, head to Scaling Dam Reservoir (10 minutes), where you’ll find sailing, paddleboarding, an adventure golf course, and a welcoming 18th-century coaching inn overlooking the water.
