The Vicarage Adjoining St Mary's church; the view was taken from the churchyard. Parts of this brick and flint house with a thatched roof date from the 16th century. Martham has always been a large and busy village with (presently) a post office, a couple of pubs, a supermarket and a variety of other shops, doctors surgery, pharmacy and more than 30 businesses, three schools, a public library, a large playing field with skate park and multi games area and two duck ponds. In 1300 CE the village had a population of about 1,000, and during the Middle Ages Martham provided the monks in Norwich with wheat, barley and peat. C19 directories list a great number of farmers, fishermen, craftsmen and tradesmen such as grocers, butchers, tailers, drapers, shoemakers, basket makers, wheelwrights, joiners, blacksmiths, millers, brick makers, bricklayers, thatchers, glaziers, wherrymen and watchmakers. Most of the bricks seen in older houses were made locally and are of similar appearance, texture and colour. Great Yarmouth

Village sign, Catfield. "This sign was unveiled by John Francis from Anglia Television on 14 September 1998". As well as 197397, a tractor and a trading wherry (see TG2508), the sign depicts a cat and, at the top, the local rare species, a swallowtail butterfly. The wherry is significant because the village has two staithes, one on the Ant in TG3620 and one on the Thurne TG3921 - just over 2 miles as the crow flies, not much more by road, but a tortuous 14 miles or more by river. Apparently the village used to be known as "Clever Catfield" for this reason.
