"A wonderful place to stay, though only an OK place to eat if nothing else close by.
The building is full of character in a good way, the setting is lovely, and the rooms renovated carefully to a high standard. The public areas are also lovely, and the staff welcoming and helpful. All in all it would look like a nice up-market hotel.
However, I don't think that's maybe their target market right now. I think they may be needing to go after the corporate market at the moment - maybe everything has got so expensive they're aren't enough people on holidays or weekends away. For that kind of place, the rooms and public areas are amazing, and the food is more or less what you'd expect from a corporate-customer hotel.
Specifically, our dining room food was fine, as you might get in a competent budget kind of restaurant, but other diners were not as happy. It didn't quite get to a Fawlty Towers level, but the customer's complaints were made in a courteous but firm way, while the staff got a bit defensive. I don't think the customer was ever made happy, and I'm not sure the staff ever got to the point of apologizing (even if they couldn't really control the quality of the food, which in this case was a steak). The food was also very slow to come. For breakfast it's certainly a level above the Holiday Inn Express cold buffet, with a choice of one hot item cooked to order and the rest with what was out, and it was fine too. If it was a budget hotel you'd even maybe say good."
