Growing up in Australia listening to the tales of bravery and valour shown by both sides at Gallipoli in 1915, it was only natural that it was one of the first places I should visit in Turkey. This is the French Military Cemetery and it was so incredibly peaceful, it was one of my favourite places. It is beautifully tended, with lovely views out over the sea and I was the only person there - probably because it was the middle of winter! I will go back here and spend a few days self driving in order to spend more time in places like this. I am glad i did a tour that first day though, being both pushed for time and interested to hear the Turkish perspective from my very knowledgeable guide.

Ataturk bestows the title of hero and the honour of being treated as sons of Turkey on the fallen ANZAC soldiers. He was there in the Gallipoli campaign, as a Turkish Army Officer. He rose to become the first President of an independent Turkey.
