It's easy to stay at a generic box type hotel. The Strand has pedigree (See Raffles and E&O). It's a beautiful building with high ceilings. Beautifully decorated and clean. Very pleasant staff. Quiet and tranquil. Stay here for your first visit to Yangon, and you can always stay at a generic, branded hotel on a subsequent visit.

The Palace is on the lake surrounded by water. The architecture is absolutely beautiful. Went there on a Sunday afternoon at it was close, but I know that there is a restaurant inside. Even if you go for a walk around the lake and to take pictures from outside, you will be impressed.
