I feel like I had heard of this church, but didnt really understand the significance of what happened there until I visited. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute right next door is a really well done history of racism and civil rights in the US. I'd definitely recommend if you are in Birmingham for a while.
Several powerful sculptures were commissioned for the park to illustrate the Civil Rights Movement events that happened here and this one was one of tho most moving.
The park served as a gathering place for demonstrations in 1963 and fire hoses were turned on marchers, many of them children. This art piece depicts the

Miss Electra, Power Goddess !!

This Gold Leafed Goddess wields her lightning bolts over the City of Birmingham from 20 stories high atop the Art Deco Alabama Power Building built in 1925.

Finding the right vantage point to take a picture is tricky and you will need a long lens. I caught her on a very overcast day and was really hoping to catch her with a dark blue clear sky. Maybe next time...

Electra stands on her tippy-toes to reach 23 feet and, although it is ungentlemanly of me to discuss, weighs 4,000 pounds. She was originally cast in bronze and then gold leafed.

Cleaned and re-gilded on her 70th birthday in 1996, The "Butt-Naked" Babe still looks as intoxicating as ever from her elusive perch.

She has no affiliation with Greek Myth Electra, the vengeful and murderous daughter of King Agamemnon. But.... not sure I would want to cross her either way with those ominous bolts in hand.

The 1963 bombing of the church by the KKK murdered 6 children in total and sparked outrage across the world. This marked a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. #civilrights #historymatters

Room was decently clean but the floor could use a wet mopping. Various types of smoking were going on everywhere and weed coming through the vents. Pretty quiet considering the clientele. Beds were clean and comfortable and AC worked great. Odd folks around but relatively safe, just keep your head ...

The room kind of smelt like water or I don’t know how to explain it almost like sewer water but not as stout. It was a nice stay all in all.
