Charming apartment in one of Bergens oldest streets
The apartment is on ground floor in an old Bergens house located in Cort Pihls Smau. (Smau is a narrow street in local language) The Smau is a steep street between Strandgaten and Klosteret. You will get the feeling that you are staying in historical Bergen. Cort Pihl was a Hanseatic businessman moving from Bryggen to the Strand in the 16 century. Although the location is super central, Cort Pihls Smau is a quiet street with no traffic. The famous Norwegian author Amalie Skram lived next door.

Cort Piilsmauet has not changed its name or race since the 17th century. The name has been written in many different ways, such as Kortpil-, Korpil-, Korpel-, or Koppel-. The street is named after the Hanseatic merchant Cort Piil, who was a councilor in Bergen from the 1580s to approx. 1600. He originally lived at Bryggen, but eventually lost his citizenship and settled at Stranden. A small stream once ran along the street, which in 1625 was called Altenaa. This may have been the origin of the name of Altonagården, which is located at the bottom of Cort Piilsmauet. The building environment consists of old wooden houses, and wooden houses with brick facades from the period after 1830. The Borgerskolen (later Laading's school) was located in the alley from 1830 to 1871.
