The town of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau region is known for its many vineyards spread across picturesque terrain. Historic town fortifications, churches and castles complement the range of cafés and restaurants that adorn the town center. Take photographs of the exceptional pink tower of the 11th-century Crass Castle, which is one of the town’s oldest buildings. Stay in the castle’s hotel and try the haute cuisine in the restaurant. On the bank of the Rhine River, a couple blocks south of the train station in the town center, stands the Eltville Electoral Castle. Admire the whitewashed façade and visit the elegant courtyard. Climb to the top of the tower and enjoy the views of the river and the rest of the town.

Make your way to Eberbach Abbey in the northwestern outskirts to see the site where parts of The Name of the Rose were filmed. Stroll through the majestic corridors of the monastery and admire the Romanesque design.

Attend the Sparkling Wine and Biedermeier Festival on the river in July. Continue with the wine theme and head to the vineyards dotted around the suburbs. Among the well-known estates are Sektmanufaktur Vaux, Weingut C. Belz and Weinguthof Klostermühle. Visit the neo-Gothic estate of the Winery Robert Weil to try its riesling white grape variety.

The town is on the northern bank of the Rhine River, as it meanders its way across the Darmstadt region in Hesse. Fly to the Mainz Finthen Airport and drive north for about 15 miles (24 kilometers) to arrive here in 25 minutes. Get around the area via buses and trains from Eltville Railway Station. Visit nearby areas, such as Lennebergwald, Höllenberg and Mainz.
