This hotel is tucked away in a quiet portion of the French Concession and served me well as a jumping off point to explore the city. Metro users note Line 1 is just around the corner about 4-5 minutes walk and is much closer than Zhaojiabang Rd. stop on Line 7/9. They also provide complimentary bottled water in the elevator lobbies, so it is super convenient to grab some when headed to your room.

We absolutely loved at stay at Chateau Star, it was more then what we expected. Breakfast buffet was exceptional. Staff were friendly and helped as much as they could given language barrier, really only had 1 staff member who spoke English which was great as we weren't proficient with the translation apps immediately. Rooms were clean and we were super comfortable. There were plenty of restaurants and cafes, along with sone corner stores a short walk away. We will definitely be staying there again.

Disappointing Service for a Five-Star Hotel The hotel’s location is excellent, and the room was spacious and comfortable. Unfortunately, those were the only highlights of our stay. The service was far below what we expected from a five-star hotel. Staff at the front desk, room service, and entrance were not professional or welcoming. While their English skills could be improved, the bigger issue was their attitude. They were often cold, unfriendly, and seemed unwilling to help or show genuine care for guests. Housekeeping also failed to follow our requested room-cleaning schedule, causing unnecessary inconvenience. At checkout, the experience was equally disappointing. The staff made the departure feel rushed and impersonal, and no one offered to help carry or load our luggage into the car—a basic service commonly expected at a luxury hotel. Another issue was the swimming pool policy. Guests are required to wear swimming caps, but this was never communicated before we arrived at the pool. Such requirements should be clearly explained during booking or check-in to avoid inconvenience. A true five-star hotel is defined not only by its location and facilities but also by exceptional hospitality and attentive service. Unfortunately, this hotel failed to deliver the level of professionalism, warmth, and customer care that its rating and pricing promise. I hope management invests in better staff training and guest service, as the overall experience did not justify a5 star hotel.
