Since the thrilling games of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler Olympic Park has been open to the public. Both amateurs and athletes flock here to practice different types of wintersports and summer activities.
With 34 miles (55 kilometers) of ski and 12 miles (20 kilometers) of snowshoe trails, Whistler Olympic Park (WOP) has a lot to offer for people who want to explore the winter wonderland. The paths cross those of the Callaghan Country Wilderness Adventures (CCWA), together forming the Ski Callaghan area and adding many more miles of accessible trails.
Strap on snowshoes or skis in winter and explore the cross-country or backcountry trails. Lessons are available for all ages and children will enjoy the rides down the toboggan hill.
The resort also caters for special biathlons, where contesters alternate between cross-country skiing and target shooting. Give it a go yourself and learn how to ski fast and shoot straight!
During the summer, access to the backcountry is free and you can explore nature trails by foot, mountain bike or on horseback. Visit the day lodge and collect maps for the trails or take the interpretive tour, followed by lunch in the restaurant with a view of snow-capped peaks.
Whistler Olympic Park is 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Whistler and has a gear rental shop. Parking is free. The roads are cleared often, but ensure your vehicle has snow tires in winter if it isn’t a four-wheel drive.
A day pass includes CCWA trails and the price, which is generally low, depends on your age, group size and activity. The park is open daily, but closes at night and gate hours vary with the season. Check the website for current times and rates. Dogs are allowed in the park for a small fee. Save time and avoid cues by arriving early and pre-booking activities, lessons and gear.
Snowfall starts mid to late November. The facility closes to the public in late March/early April, when the snow on the ground starts to get average, and reopens in May for summer activities.
