I loved this place so much! The place is just beautiful, staff is super helpful and friendly and breakfast is great. Also located in the nicest part of the medina! Highly recommend!
Full of character and very welcoming staff. Perfect if you want a hotel that is unique, full of charm and history right at the heart of the Medina. The roof terrace with different seating areas is a bonus. might not suit those who like the big hotel chains, but I would choose this every time.
The hotel was very unique, the staff was very accommodating and it was in the Medina where there is lots of shopping. I would highly recommend this hotel. the hotel has a limited amount of rooms. there is no elevator but the staff delivers your luggage to your room. there is a lovely view of the city on the rooftop.

Property was well maintained and in a good part of the old Madina. The room faces a courtyard and is extremely noisy. We were kept up past midnight due to other guests laughing and talking loudly. The bed is in a nook, surrounded on 3 sides by walls, so one person had to crawl over the other to get out. There were no blankets on the bed so we froze. We had to wear our full clothes and sweaters in bed but barely slept all night. What hotel welcomes their guests with nothing but sheets on their beds? It was a real shame, because otherwise it was neat renovated historical residence.

Disliked: Cleanliness, amenities
The room was dirty. Bathroom smelled. Decor was great, however I would prefer a cleaner room and less decor. The staff was OK, Rim, the cleaning lady and cook was AMAZING!!! Only reason I enjoyed my stay there. She is so hospitable, kind and sweet. And her coffee is the BEST!!! The internet was horrible!!! I even complained to the front desk personnel, nothing was done. Sooo slow could not even connect at times. I loved the area, the Old Medina is Great, walkable and close to restaurants and cafes. Tunisians are humble and loving people.
There are many things to like about this Riad. First and foremost was the excellent staff. They arranged a pick up and drop off at the airport 50 dinar each way. One of the downsides to Tunis is the dishonest taxi drivers. This was an excellent price and such a relief to see our driver waiting with my name when we arrived.
The rooms are exquisitely decorated and very comfortable. The only real criticism we had was the shower head which was hand held - in summer this wouldn’t be such a problem but in winter it was difficult to lather yourself and stay warm.
Breakfast was very good and the bed comfortable. There was also a small fridge.
The Riad is located near the edge of the Medina and there are lots of shops as well as the souks. There are two very upmarket restaurants close by but you have to walk further to find cheaper local places to eat.
Especially pleasing was the hotel organising a driver to take us to El Jem which is two hours south of Tunis.

If you want to be in the Messina, it’s perfectly located. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Room was good too.
Perfect place to stay on the edge of the Medina. Beautiful building with a lovely courtyard to enjoy breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff. Cafes and restaurants a few meters away in the Medina. Safe for solo female traveler. Highly recommend.
This property has a very accommodating host and it is exceptionally clean. Everyone working here is extremely helpful and kind. Dar Ben Gacem is beautiful, with rooftop views and amazing tile and architecture throughout. There are many areas to relax and enjoy the ambience. The breakfast has delicious food and an outstanding chef. If you need anything, they are always there to help. Another way they accommodate guest is by speaking English, Arabic and French.
I highly recommend this establishment, we will most definitely return.

Staff was argumentative and rude after hotel had sent us an airport pick up confirmation including cost and front desk claimed their eMail was wrong, we owed more. The young man was downright nasty and thereafter passive aggressive with poor attitude. Very disappointing "welcome"
Dar Ben Gacem is beautiful, welcoming, and the perfect location to enjoy the Tunis medina and its best cafes. The staff is super helpful, always available, and really caring. The women who prepare and serve the amazing breakfast (Shakshouka!) are so kind. The rooms are amazing but so are the common areas, and the place is full of beautiful books about Tunisia.
The property is under renovation,Room was not ready
No warm Water, the fridge not working and mouldy.
No cups ,no complementary tea or coffee, no boiler.
The second day no hand Soap.
For sure does not worth the Money

Maybe because it was really hot, so the Air conditioner was not cool enough.
I booked this hotel on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews and I wasn't disappointed. It is located just off the Tunis Medina down some very narrow streets and off the beaten track. At first, I wasn't sure what I had let myself in for, but the moment we stepped through the door, we entered another world. It's a boutique hotel exquisitely decorated in the old moorish style, including a lovely courtyard (where we had our breakfast) and rooms off it on the ground and first floor. Our room was small but so very lovely, with a wooden shutters at the windows, carpet on the floor, and a large and comfy raised divan bed. The bathroom was modern (with shower, basin, and toilet). Overall, it was very quiet although we could hear in the distant the call to prayer, which we found really atmospheric. Breakfast was great! Yoghurt, fruit, fruit juice, and bread and pastries, and the best coffee I have had ever. We stayed two nights and on both nights, we ate in. There is no restaurant or menu as such but the staff was happy to organise local cuisine depending on our food preference. I really recommend doing this as the food was delicious and reasonable and there is a cosy and charming small dining room to use. The hotel is decorated throughout with traditional fabrics and furniture as well as some very modern art pieces which blend in well with them. We fell in love with the place and would have loved to stay longer.
Sana and Dali were very friendly, pleasant and helpful. The medina location is perfect and quiet, sufficiently away from the huddle and bussle of the medina. A taxi can actually get quite near to the Dar.
