The “Bauernkate Klein-Thurow” is nestled in beautiful natural surroundings, surrounded by numerous lakes in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. The historic complex, a designated landmark, was lovingly and meticulously restored by the owners, Jutta and Frank Strauß, and expanded in 2015 to include a historic reconstruction of a barn, which now houses the “Alte Scheune” vacation rental. Clay-filled half-timbered walls, centuries-old ceiling beams, hand-molded floor tiles that are nearly as old, and historic cast-iron windows are the regional building materials that give this vacation rental its very own character. Surrounding a 19th-century Danish column stove (disclosure: there is no central heating; we provide firewood), a comfortable sofa and a functional kitchenette—along with an old kitchen table and chairs—share a room of about 24 square meters, which opens onto a small bathroom. A wooden staircase leads up to the “hayloft,” where you’ll find two small bedrooms. The special perk of this apartment: sunny terrace spots from morning to evening, and a greenhouse right off the terrace—open to all guests—in case it gets too chilly out there!
