Museum of Arts and Design

Museum of Arts and Design which includes cbd, a high rise building and a monument
Be amazed by the beauty of handicrafts at New York City’s premier space dedicated to art created in glass, clay, cloth, metal and wood.

New York City’s Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) is a space dedicated to design and handicrafts, located in the vibrant Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Find works here made in media ranging from clay to blown glass, carved wood to gem stones. The towering building is a hub of creativity and is home to an array of resident artists, who create each day in this inspiring and uplifting atmosphere.

Following a massive renovation project, the 10-floor building which today houses the Museum of Arts and Design is almost as impressive as the exhibits it displays. In addition to the exhibition galleries spread across four floors, it is home to the Tiffany & Co. Foundation Jewelry Gallery, a restaurant, a vast auditorium and a gift shop. After a visit to the exhibitions, peruse the excellent gift shop for quirky, contemporary jewelry to take home with you.

Meet the friendly resident artists and watch as they create their pieces in the 6th-floor studios. See master craftsmen work in metal, wood, clay, glass and cloth. There are some 2,000 permanent pieces in the main collection, including porcelain by acclaimed artist Cindy Sherman, stained glass by Judith Schaechter and ceramics by James Turrell. Peruse the works back at home at your own pace via the MAD’s website. Every one of the items in its permanent collections is listed here, along with detailed descriptions.

Head to the Robert restaurant and bar on the 9th floor. This bright, modern space offers wonderful panoramic views across the city. Sip on cocktails, enjoy a leisurely meal and contemplate the dazzling works you have seen during your visit.

The Museum of Arts and Design is located at 2 Columbus Circle. Check the opening times before you go, as they vary depending on the day, and the museum is closed on Mondays. There is an admission charge, with concessions for seniors and students. Reach MAD easily by cab, bus and subway.
