Don't go there

Having been informed by Hotels.com of the following "Don’t worry, we haven’t taken any payment as you’ll pay the hotel directly in their local currency, along with any additional charges and fees incurred during your stay" the Shelleys Hotel attempted unsuccessfully to debit into my credit card one day before I arrived .Then, they called me to ask for card number, pin etc to pay oer the phone. I declined, stating that I would pay during my stay (as stated above by Hotels.com). Having booked breakfast with them on arrival in the afternoon, they had no record of this in the following morning. Poor service. There was no heating in the hotel (outside temperatures in the morning being only 7C). Complained at the time on each occasion. Will never go there again.

Disappointed

We were so disappointed with our stay, the property should not be open during the COVID pandemic. We stayed for 2 nights, no maid service so clean your own room etc. The waiter in the restaurant which was open the first night was friendly and attentive and the meal was ok. The restaurant was closed on the second night. No indication on the website that service is restricted. A lovely property which unfortunately is run down and urgently in need of some TLC.

A little worn out, needs maintenance

Nice hotel in Lewes with really comfortable beds Unfortunately the toilet wouldn’t flush in our room and when we informed reception the response was initially ‘what do you want me to do about it’ - not in a rude manner, more from inexperience I think. The following morning at check out, with a different receptionist, they apologised profusely and said it would be repaired - but obviously that was no benefit to us.

A good place to stay!

The Hotel needs an update on carpets as looking tired but the overall cleanliness of the Hotel was good. We did not eat there so cannot comment on that. They had put thought into dealing with the present Covid needs which was reassuring. It was disappointing that our rooms were not ready for over an hour after booking in time. Rooms were quiet and the location good. I would recommend it.

This was a couple's one-night stay for a short visit to Lewes. The location, character, cleanliness, quality and size of the standard room, private parking and staff attention were all really good. We did not have the (optional) breakfast. The overall experience was quite positive taking into account that it was the hotel's first opening day after the pandemic lockdown.

Lovely stay

Lovely hotel, very welcoming staff too. Room and bed very comfortable but it does need redecorating throughout and the bathroom tho clean does need a refresh of paint work and grout and sealer on tiles. Facilities in room good tea/coffee etc, hairdryer and bottled water in room. Toiletries in bathroom and fluffy towels. Shower very good

Excellent Lewes property

No complaints, only slight negative was the bed, a little too firm for my liking. Property was very clean and beautifully kept. Easy access to public transportation. Definitely worth a visit.

Food wasn't good. The cheese on the cheese board was cold. And breakfast was overpriced and not very nice. I wasn't given any butter or jam for my toast and the scrabbled eggs were insipid.

The hotel is convenient for a visit to Glyndebourne. A little more attention to detail is required - dirty milk jug and faulty light bulbs

Pleasant hotel - good location

Calm and tranquil place - has an air of slightly faded grandeur. I liked it. Very nice room overlooking the really lovely garden. Breakfast was good and most of the staff very pleasant. Woman on the desk on the first evening was rather difficult though - rather sharp and unhelpful. Good location
Comfortable bedroom
Nice toiletries
Garden view
More garden

When staying at one of the large hotel chains I find one hotel to be much like another. This property id very different. It is a lovely old building full of history & very individual with parts dating back to the 16th century. My bedroom & bathroom were huge with a very comfortable bed. It was well decorated in a style sympathetic to the age of the building. It was also good to have a proper key for the bedroom door rather than the electronic version that I have had many issues with in the past. The number of times I've returned to my hotel room in the past only to find that the credit card type of electronic key don't work!!! I did find it a little strange to have to leave the key at reception every time I went out though.
