Little Oatlands was home for 9 of us for a flower filled week in May. We assembled from KC, BC, CA and VA to attend my daughter’s wedding overlooking the Potomac at Murray Hill.
The property and approach to Little Oatlands takes your breath away! Flowering Dogwoods line the drive blending with the white fence and homes in the distance. Each of us walked down the lane to read the plaques and the history of the preserved property. Certainly a history lesson and it would be wonderful to know more.
There are grand rooms and humble spaces in the Main House. We enjoyed them all! The owners shared linens and China for the generous dining room and we lit candles one evening for dinner. The 4 seats at the kitchen table were the ones in highest demand.
We all sat on the front brick patio most mornings gazing at the fields ahead. Cows would appear at the fence, Blue birds and Cardinals flew in daily and Bunnies peeked through the edges.
But the 2 acre garden, a sanctuary in itself, was the delight of us all! The photos on the website cannot begin to capture it all!
It is not a modern property and is not fashioned that way. It is a loving time capsule of years forever gone. Rarely will you find a place that you may call your own for a few days to imagine what it must have been like to live at that time.
My granddaughter and her father learned pickleball, we learned to make endcaps for wedding aisle chairs and there was a pick your own Strawberry patch at the start of the lane.
