I almost hesitate to give this a five-star review, because I don’t want the secret to get out – this is the best place to stay in Houghton! Our son is a student at MTU, so we are in the area numerous times a year. We have stayed at various other properties (both Airbnb’s and other hotels), but Independence Stay has become our go-to spot. The property is always immaculately clean, modern, and well-maintained. The staff is friendly. The rooms are comfortable, with just enough kitchen supplies to prepare simple meals. One thing to note ahead of time is that there is no elevator, so if you are on the second floor, you will need to take the stairs. Obviously not a deal-breaker for us, so we’ll be back the next time we’re in Houghton.

We have stayed here numerous times. It is pet friendly, which is nice when we bring our furry friend. Being pet friendly and seeing other dogs at the hotel, it is still a quiet hotel. I never heard another dog. The rooms were clean and modern, the staff, friendly and helpful, and the price is right. We will be back again.

Booked 2 nights through Expedia. Independence Stay kicked us out after the first night. They said they didn't get Expedia's reservation and they were already booked. Will never stay there again.

From the moment you walk into the hotel, you're greeted with the fresh scent of a new, clean building. The lobby offers complimentary snacks and drinks, which was a nice touch. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful any time we needed assistance. Our room was clean, well-equipped, and spacious. The bed was a bit firm for my personal preference, but still comfortable overall. One downside: the bright exterior parking lot lights shine into the rooms quite a bit, and the blackout curtains don't block out much light. If you're sensitive to light while sleeping, consider requesting a room on the opposite side of the building. A couple of things to note — there’s no toaster or pool on-site. However, restaurants and shopping are within easy walking distance, and many major attractions are either nearby or a short drive away. On-site parking is conveniently located near exterior entrances.

Wonderful hotel with friendly staff. Loved the room layout with small kitchen and comfortable king size bed. Quiet hotel for getting a good night’s sleep, but close to restaurants, gas, and convenience shopping. No continental breakfast, but lobby stays stocked with free coffee, apples, yogurt, and snacks. Great stay!

Everything was good until we received a call: first time I missed since I left hotel on the road driving, about a fe minutes later we received the second call. A lady rudely questioned us if we saw a sign to clean up the dishes after we use. I told her we cleaned every single item we used. The plates and bowls got all cleaned. There is no rack and no dishes washer so we washed all but did not put away to cabinet because they are wet. Besides clean all dishes, we make sure all surfaces including oven surfaces we cleaned before we left. It was a big shock for us to receive the call and a big shock to us to hear her tone of voices. We thought she might have missed up with different room number. Even so, calling the customer to accuse them not wasting dishes is strange at least.

I one at the desk when I arrived. Wrang the bell and waited 5 minutes for someone to arrive. Room was spacious and clean and good location. Would stay here again.

Omg..We can not wait to come back and stay here. The room was super clean and well stocked. Bed was a little springy for our liking and no breakfast sandwiches were stocked this morning but we did not mind as the staff and room itself exceeded our expectations..

This hotel was clean with nice staff. We stayed 2 nights- my only complaint was the delicious takeaway microwaveable breakfast sandwich was out of stock the second morning- not a big deal. Will stay there again.
