Come visit and see our gorgeous 2024 room renovations! Beds, furnishings, art, decor - everything is ALL NEW. The amazing ocean front view remains the same ;-)

Hale Kai Hawaii Suites offers four oceanfront rooms (booked individually) and a spectacular, panoramic view of the blue Pacific Ocean and Hilo Bay. We overlook the popular Honolii surfing beach in a peaceful location just 2 miles north of historic Hilo Town. Revel in the best views in Hilo while at our pool and oceanfront lanai!

The Pele Suite offers a garden view bedroom with California king bed and separate ocean view sitting room with a Hawaiian style loveseat, table and chairs, kitchenette (portable one burner cooktop, microwave, small fridge/freezer, coffee maker, hot water pot, dishes, utensils, pots and pans), WiFi, SMART TV, private bathroom with shower, ceiling fans, portable fan, no air conditioning, and sliding door to lanai. Please note: Sitting room has ocean view, bedroom has view of small walkway garden. Continental breakfast items are stocked daily and we invite all guests to swim in the pool or lounge on the oceanfront lanai.

A few NOTES: One parking spot is provided per room in this quiet residential neighborhood. All Guest Rooms are facing the ocean on the lower level of the property and there are over 20 steps down (pictured) to traverse to the rooms. Guests are responsible for carrying their luggage to their rooms. Bookings limited to 2 guests per room (including children). Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am for the comfort of all of our guests, Mahalo!

While at Hale Kai (House on the Ocean) Hawaii, enjoy watching surfers, dolphins, and seasonal humpback whales during their annual migration to the Hawaiian Islands from the north Pacific. Wonderful

This was our first time staying at this property and loved it. The view was spectacular. Such a peaceful location just a few miles from downtown. I was a little nervous about there being no AC but it was not a problem at all despite the high temps during the day. The only downside was someone parking in our spot. The situation was eventually remedied. Definitely recommended. Will see if this place is available next time we visit Hilo.

Perfect Hilo Area Spot

Just a quick drive North of Hilo. Wonderful views of the surfing on Honoli'i Beach. Clean, comfortable, great pool with views. Everything you need. Great jumping off point for Hilo, the Hamakua Coast, the Volcanoes area, etc. Highly recommend!

This place was perfect for us! The views from the outdoor patio and pool area couldn't be beat. Amazing sunrise every morning and were able to see whales. The unit itself was comfortable, had everything we needed. As mentioned there is no AC but it was still very comfortable with ceiling fans and a portable fan available. The breakfast was tasty with good variety each day. We would absolutely stay here again!

Ocean views

Nice little apartment with a fantastic ocean view for whale watching. We enjoyed the complementary fruit / breakfast which is stocked in the fridge each day. It's nice and close to Hilo, but not quite walking distance. Furniture, bed, etc. are well thought out.In terms of compromises: The bathroom was OK (a fair amount of small bugs / ants; a bit small); there are a lot of frogs at night in this area which might annoy light sleepers; there is no proper kitchen. We were fine with these compromises for the great view.

The Pele suite at this property was as pictured on VRBO. Great access to Hilo and all Puna district and Hamakua coastline. The communication with the on island management, (Saltwater Vacations) could have been better regarding a couple of issues during the stay.

Great week long stay on the Big Island!

We chose to spend our entire week with Pele at Hale Kai as our center of operations; couldn’t have been more pleased. Comfortable accommodations, great breakfasts provided, easy access to everything in Hilo, and a fantastic setting. Would do it again without hesitation.

Excellent spot for East side of island

We stayed five nights here while visiting the Hilo area. It is a beautiful spot. We saw whales outside almost every day and enjoyed watching the body surfers from the deck. The views are amazing. Having a light breakfast with fresh fruit each morning was a nice touch. The place is spacious with a good sized bedroom, nice sitting area, small kitchenette and a small bathroom. It all looks fairly updated and in good condition. Lots of storage for suitcases and clothes. About two miles into downtown Hilo so very easy to get around. The weather was quite cool and wet while we were there so we didn’t use the pool or hot tub. The parking spots were a little tight but it never seemed like all four spots were being used so there was room to manoeuvre! Any question we had was responded to via email very promptly both before and during our stay. We would recommend this place as a nice quiet oasis for visiting Hilo and surrounding areas.

Great Views and cozy accomodations

The property is very nice and cozy. Not fancy, but very workable and clean. Appreciated the daily breakfast muffins and the coffee. View from the patio is great and the pool is just big enough to cool off. The hot tub was set way too high at 104, so we did not use it. The bed was comfy. Overall a great place to stay for the value. Aloha

Short stay in a beautiful location

The views were gorgeous, loved sunrise and watching the surfers from our deck. The property was a little dated but that’s what I expected, so no surprise. Quite a bargain for the location and views and breakfast included.

Hilo vacation

Loved the Pele suite. lots of room and the view is fantastic. Sitting outside over the pool watching the surfers is great. Very quiet and the grounds are lovely. Breakfast of muffins and fruit fresh every morning was a nice touch. Pool and hot tub are nice and since only 4 rooms here always empty. Only 5 min from downtown Hilo and all the shops and food choices.

Great 2 night stay

Great location to do a few days of site seeing around Hilo. Pool and hot tub were great. Enjoyed the views of the surfers from the balcony. While it was not hot and we were comfortable, I did miss the ac. Since we were not hanging out all day at the condo it worked perfect for a base for all we needed to do. The sunrises were amazing. I don’t have any objections to recommending anyone to stay here.

It was an OK property. View is nice and the room is spacious. The breakfast was plentiful with a nice selection but it needs some upgrades to get to the next level such as: deep cleaning, ensuring that netting covers the entire opening to prevent bugs from coming in, A/C!!! please. Also, we had the largest room (Pelé) but that meant the people from all the other rooms had to walk past our room. I would have rather had the privacy of the furthest room in order not to have people walking by our room. Loved the nature noises and waves breaking at night.

My wife and I spent the weekend at this quaint getaway. Location is fantastic. Just north of Hilo and a beautiful view of the ocean and the most popular surfing location in the area. Owner is fantastic with communication and texted me on the day of my arrival. Sunrises were amazing while enjoying a modest breakfast provided daily. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Loved the pool and jacuzzi too!

A wonderful stay in Hilo

We stayed in the Pele suite for three nights. Our stay was wonderful. The view from our lanai is amazing. Watching surfers, whales, ships entering the port, and the weather was great. While we didn't use the pool or hot tub, they looked inviting. We enjoyed the breakfast provided each morning. The fruit was great!!. Overall the unit was as advertised. Staff that we met were all courteous, friendly and helpful. We had a couple of things which needed some attention. The handyman was very attentive and happy to help us. Everything was fixed to our satisfaction immediately...within hours. Overall a great stay. We'd definitely stay in the Pele suite again.
