About this property
Come experience absolute tranquility... without roughing it!
The Nuthouse Cottage, located on 48 acres of farmland with a recreational pond, is a three story home with a well-appointed and convenient kitchen. The comfy living room has a gas fireplace and opens onto porches with rockers and tables, a gas grill, a vined pergola with a chiminea, and perennial gardens.
On the second floor are two bedrooms with queen beds and a shared bath with a spacious walk-in tiled shower. The master bedroom features a gas-burning fireplace while the second bedroom has a spiral staircase up to the Crow’s Nest. This nice perch has a 360-degree view and is perfect for curling up on the window seats to read and nap. Little ones love sleeping up in the stars.
Walks through the adjacent hardwood sanctuary with an understory of ferns and mountain laurel always reveal natural surprises. Birds and wildlife abound. Down at Reflection Pond, stocked with bream and bass, the fishing is easy. Sit in the boathouse out of the sun, or fish from the dock. Enjoy a meal under the picnic shelter where there's a charcoal grill and an open fire pit for roasting hot dogs and S'mores. Dogs and children have lots of running room. Two kayaks, tubes, and a floating dock are available so you can get out on the water.
The land is beautiful and promising at all times of the year. In May and June, the gardens are blooming and in July, blueberries are ripe for the picking. By August, fields are colored with wild-flowers and butterflies. Come late September into October while the leaves are at peak color, the Virginia Beauty apples ripen and are ready to harvest. And then, even in winter, with or without snow, there is a stark leafless beauty. In any season, the night sky, away from city lights, is perfect for stargazing.
The New River is just 10 minutes away and kayaking / tubing the river is a favorite activity. Helton Creek for trout fishing is just 5 minutes down the road. Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers are nearby hiking favorites and White top, start of the Creeper Trail for biking, is a 25 minute drive.
The cottage has a smart TV, a DVD player, and free WiFi (40 Mbps download). Other amenities include W/D, dishwasher, gas cooktop, convection oven, and microwave. The kitchen is stocked for serious cooking. Chimenea wood is available year round.

Super relaxing retreat in the mountains. We loved the cute and comfortable cottage, the pond, property and amenities. Left feeling recharged and relaxed!
Stayed here to be in close proximity to Grayson Highlands state park for a trail race. Nothing negative to say about our lodging and the property. We had everything we needed and the grounds are beautiful. Highly recommend if you are escaping the city and want a relaxing stay in the playground I call the mountains!
This is our second family stay in the lovely Nuthouse and it was magical. They have given thought to every detail, making this a cozy and luxurious stay for all! The hosts are terrific people— so responsive and generous. We love it there!
I can't say enough good things about the Nuthouse. Amazing property. Beautiful landscape, beautiful grounds and more than beautiful house inside and out. The owners were a pleasure to deal with, both by messaging and in person. We can't wait to be back
The Nuthouse cottage exceeded expectations! The house was clean and well stocked with everything you could want for an escape away from the city. The property had amazing views and was immaculately manicured. Traylor was an awesome host and this would be the first place we would check if/when we want to come back to the area!
One of the best VRBO places we’ve ever stayed. Great attention to detail and very clean. The only reason I would not highly recommend is that I want it to be available to go back again and stay in the future.
Another Wonderful Vacation at the Nuthouse Cottage
This was our second time staying at the Nuthouse Cottage. We selected this property again because it provides such a peaceful experience. The cottage is very inviting and the kitchen is well equipped with all your cooking needs. The Nuthouse Cottage is surrounded by nature, providing a sense of calm. We enjoyed fishing, swimming, and tubing in the Reflection Pond located on the property. The property owners are wonderful and really put a lot of thought into creating a relaxing environment for their guests. We are very fond of the Nuthouse Cottage and hope to return again in the future.
Maybe the BEST house we have ever rented. The hosts truly thought of everything, and the house was fully stocked. The property is gorgeous, and we explored all the trails, the pond, and the highest overlook. The house itself is just charming and has so much personality, with each little space decorated so uniquely. My favorite room was what we called the "tippy top"... windows all around to see the magnificent view. We loved to sip coffee and read up there. I cannot recommend the Nut House enough! We look forward to coming back!
Tremendous! I've rented 50 private spaces in the last 14 years, this may be THE overall best. It's a perfect mix of design and functionality - a luxury home with punctuations of personality and color tucked into nooks and crannies. The nut theme is throughout the house, with dog friendly features as well. Chotchkies from the owners' adventures invite curiosity and conversation. Meanwhile the person/s who designed and executed it must be INSIDE my head. From the European style windows, to the custom cabinets that fit perfectly with the door swings, to the indulgent shower, there are aspects of planning and care here that I've wanted to experience my entire adult life! The kitchen has all the basics and many more, amazing appliances, and I love the table in the center of it all. The bedding is beautiful, sheets and towels are very high quality. The gas fireplaces keep you warm without fumes or hard work. Porches are divine, the chimnea is so nice in the mornings or relaxing in the evenings. Most of the property is fenced so we felt totally safe letting our dog run around chasing squirrels and birds. There are deer as well on the property. The gorgeous spring fed pond is relaxing, fun for fishing, and great to sit by with a fire. The stars are INSANE!! The Nut House luxury without being pretentious or fussy...smart and tidy without being uptight. It's CLEAN and Traylor is wonderful host, the area and surrounding towns are magic! I could go on but I'm running out of characters.
I was welcomed by the host as I arrived and got lots of good info on places to eat and attractions. There was also lots of info in the house. I have never rented a place with a better stocked kitchen- nice pots, pans and good knives lots of dishes too. Updated appliances and comfy furniture. The view was amazing even after all the leaves had fallen. Star gazing was top notch too. We walked some of the trails and I caught some nice fish in the pond. We will definitely be returning to the Nut House
This is the second time we have stayed here, and it will not be the last. The Nut House is absolute perfection. Nestled in the gorgeous mountains surrounded by nature, each little detail of the home is so charming. It has become a "home away from home" for us. Highly recommend!
One of the loveliest homes and properties we have ever stayed. The view is incredible, the location is absolutely beautiful and peaceful and the home is cozy and comfortable. Our whole family loved every minute of our visit here. The fireflies at night were spectacular. The kitchen is one of the best stocked I’ve ever seen. My kids loved the crow’s nest and rocking in the chairs on the front porch was blissful. We certainly plan to return!!
Our family is absolutely nuts about the Nuthouse Cottage!
So much more than just a rental cottage, the views, the pond, the trails are immaculate. Pictures do not do this cottage and surrounding property justice. The Nuthouse Cottage is absolutely wonderful, the crow's nest was hit with the kids and the kitchen made prepping family meals a breeze! The surrounding property is absolutely gorgeous, the views are amazing, the grounds are wonderfully cared for and the pond makes for a spectacular spot to fish, swim, paddle around or just relax. Definitely woild recommend and we will certainly be planning another stay in the "Nuthouse"!
Thank U for sharing your beautiful home with us! Loved that it was still decorated for Christmas 🎄. Secluded & peaceful yet close to outdoor activities like hiking @ Grayson Highlands & biking the VA Creeper Trail. Hope to visit again!!
It's hard for the photos to tell the story of this very special property. The location is gorgeous, the reflection pond is a lovely bonus space, and the house itself is luxurious and outfitted with beautiful, artistic items, and the space makes relaxation easy. The quality of everything in the house is extremely high, including all of the equipment in the kitchen, which made cooking there a complete joy. Diana and Traylor are incredibly gracious hosts and were generous in taking care of us--in ways we had not anticipated! We would love to return, as this made for a very comfortable and inspiring stay!
Absolutely a magnificent place in every way! The pictures on the website are great but the actual place is beyond beautiful. If you want true peace and quiet in a beautiful well kept and cared for home with everything you need along with very attentive hosts, this would be the place to go. We are already planning our next visit to The Nuthouse!
This vacation home is absolutely beautiful! There were so many things to do on the property. The home itself as all the amenities including a kitchen any chef would feel at home in!! 100% recommend.
Wonderful home and property! Well-stocked kitchen. Loved the master bedroom fireplace with sitting area and vaulted ceilings. Cozy front porch and private location. Would definitely recommend. Thank you!

Love the Nuthouse!
Beautiful cottage in a lovely setting. Marvelous views, lambs lowing on the hillside, a pond for fishing on the property and nearby hikes to waterfalls and cascades, warm-hearted and welcoming owners who are locals themselves. You will fall in love with the Nuthouse.
