Explore the rugged terrain of Andorra at this mountain resort, which offers extensive ski trails, summertime hikes and delectable Pyrenees cuisine.

Take a skiing adventure with the family at Grandvalira, one of Europe’s largest mountain resorts, with six different sectors. High atop the Pyrenees ranges between Spain and France, this area receives bounteous snowfall in a gorgeous locale. Ski or hike through the terrain before enjoying typically Andorran culture in the villages of the sectors, such as Soldeu.

Explore Grandvalira’s extensive slope network. You can rent skis or a snowboard from local operators in each of the sectors. The resort offers 118 trails served by 64 lifts, which constitute an impressive 130 miles (210 kilometers) of downhill skiing. Test your skills on huge jumps at the terrain parks or try heli-skiing to reach the best untouched powder.

Whether on skis or just sightseeing, be sure to take the 18-minute cable car ride from Encamp village to the Solanelles area. This lookout is one of the highest points on the resort and features sweeping views across the full resort and the Pyrenees ranges.

In summer, take long hikes through the photogenic terrain. See steep cliffs and frosty forests along the Camí de l’Ossa circular route. Alternatively, take the kids on the Camí de les Pardines, a gentle walk past the beautiful Engolasters Lake. Ride the Funicamp cable car to the Els Cortals Valley, before enjoying a scenic 4x4 excursion with a guide. Try the zip line in the Canillo sector.

After some strenuous activities, relax among the modern and cultural delights of the Encamp village. Recharge your tired muscles with some hydrotherapy at Caldea, a huge thermal spa. Afterward, browse the latest fashion trends at the enormous Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany shopping areas.

Discover the region’s automobile heritage at the National Automobile Museum or take the Rural Habitat Circuit to see preserved 19th-century dwellings. Dine in one of many “bordas,” typical Pyrenees barns that have been converted into cozy restaurants. Savor authentic mountain cuisine, including snails, salami and escudella, a delectable poached meat stew.

Travel to Andorra and the Grandvalira region by car or bus from the international airports at Toulouse or Barcelona. The ski season lasts from the end of November through mid-April each year.
