Conveniently located 3 miles from downtown Gettysburg is one of the most unique ways to stay and enjoy Gettysburg. The cabin itself dates back to 1798 "as far as we can trace back as of now." But the estate dates back to 1748 when it was originally used as a farm. Later in 1927, famous Hollywood actor and Broadway star, Oscar Shaw purchased the property and constructed a massive addition to the outside of the original cabin. At this time he had the very first in ground pool in Gettysburg installed. In 1940, the son of a famous British naturalist purchased the property. His fathers hunting lodge in Britain is named Rainworth Lodge and this is where our name comes from. For more history please visit our facebook page "Historic Rainworth Lodge".
The property is located 3 miles from downtown Gettysburg. With almost 3 acres of land, there's plenty of room for small group events to be hosted or enjoy the peace and tranquility a home away from all the bars has to offer. One of the largest homes at 3,100 sq.ft, if not the largest civil war home and land in Gettysburg you can reserve exclusively to yourself.
TICK warning. Be mindful there are ticks on the property and all of the northeast united states. Due to the purist in me and my conscious awareness, I will not spray poison in our yard, please use bug spray of your own choosing if this worries you as you might want to do so enjoying the outdoors anywhere in this region. Us and every historic house i've been to in Gettysburg has black ants that come out throughout the year, We will not poison the lodge, guests, or their furbabies to try to kill harmless ants that pose no threat. We utilize natural repellents that work. But if I'm not able to treat in time, the ants come right back. We have medicinal, edible plants, flowers, berries, and saplings all over this land. Though they may not be flowing or have berries, I will not cut them down for any reason due to confusion or personal expectations. We are starting a food forest and several styles of organic/permaculture/vermiculture/natural/IMO/ no till gardens. We are also adding a mushroom fruiting area inside the lodge. We will start offering donation based education tours summer 2026. There is a large fenced in area that has grass cut to a proper height and not to the dirt for guest to enjoy though. The fence that is there is leaning due to strong constant winds and will be removed at a later date. Be mindful it is not safe for pets as there are gaps they could get through. But we do have an outside runner for one dog.
The home is historic and has repairs on the exterior that will be taking place when guest are not here and completed before guest arrive. None of the repairs needed pose any threat to guests other than to their eyes if they're wanting to see fresh shiny paint, We hope this doesn't ruin anyone's stay inside the lodge. The home is in need of pressure washing and paint which will come later and I hope doesn't ruin anyone's stay inside the lodge. The windows are also dirty due to high winds, location of lodge, and double spaced style making it difficult to keep clean, again we hope this doesn't ruin your stay inside the lodge. The downstairs bathroom has a slope in the floor and will be leveled at a later date, Since we're on well water there is scale and water spots on all water fixtures that cleaners do not remove, again we hope this doesn't ruin your stay inside the lodge. The fridge and stove are old and have stains. There's no issues with the fridge cooling or freezing and works as should. The oven display is hard to read, so consider it out of service but safe if you're able to read the display. We have no issues using it and though it's hard to, you can still see the display to set the temperature for the oven. We are not wasteful or going to further destroy the planet by buying something new because there's a stain or you consider it "broke." There's the occasional deceased stink bug in a window seal that gets missed since the house does sit till guest arrive after cleanings and we apologize ahead of time and we hope this doesn't ruin your stay inside the lodge. But the floors and all surfaces that are touched are cleaned and disinfected after every guest. Some of our bed protectors may have stains that have not come out after washing, but this is not an indication they are "dirty," we simply are not wasteful and love mother. There are fitted sheets over the protectors though and appreciate your understanding. There's also stains on the baseboards that do not come out. Scuff marks on the walls and door jams. I can go on and on with this and once all this is addressed we will change the name to Rainworth Resort. The home is historical and we have no plans to change much of it so long as it isn't wood rot or a possible hazard. The home is safe and ready for history buffs to thoroughly enjoy its architecture. Also great for paranormal investigators. The plumbing, hvac, water pressure, and hot water work the same as they would in a new home though! A brand new gas boiler, water heater, and pressure tank were all replaced November of 2024. If you have expectations after reading this description, may you find peace and happiness some day. Have a blessed existence.
We are also honoring all families or guest that may have stories from their time here. If you were one of these individuals, please contact us with any stories you would like to share. We will have a section dedicated to these stories/letters.

We had such a fun trip! Historic Rainworth Lodge was a cozy and convenient spot to rest after exploring the town and battlefields. Daniel was so accommodating and responded immediately to any questions we had. We enjoyed our time in the house and felt very comfortable. It was interesting to learn about the history of the place as well!

This place is absolutely amazing to stay at! There's a lot of history with the house along with history of the town itself. For the price, you get a lot of privacy while still being close to town to experience all that Gettysburg has to offer!
Daniel is a great host and makes getting to the property and being settled in a breeze. We look forward to returning next fall!

Dan was went above a beyond with his communication with me. The home was very clean. When you walked in it felt like a home, nothing like staying at a hotel.
We did a couple of nights of paranormal investigating. A lot of names came up.
Would definitely stay again!

We had 7 adults that stayed for 5 days. The experience was excellent overall. The host was very welcoming and even gave our group a history lesson about the property which was very interesting. We would all recommend this place and will most likely be coming back to stay again!

We enjoyed our "cousins getaway weekend" at the Lodge. The history of the home is very interesting. Daniel was very responsive to any questions we had, and checked to see if we were snowed in, which we didn't mind being. Great location to town and attractions!

Very cool historic building to get the whole Gettysburg experience. The hotel on the outside isn’t much to look at due to overgrown plants, surrounding property getting cleared and outside structure needs renovated. The interior is really nice but some of the floors are really uneven yet can’t expect perfect with a house built in the late 1700s lol. Overall, I’d recommend it and would stay here again!

The outside is a little rough around the edges but the inside is gorgeous. Very reasonable price to be able stay in such a large, clean, well appointed and historic home. I plan on going back. Really close to Gettysburg, just outside town. Mattresses were great, slept like a baby.

Those with older homes would very much appreicate the love that is being put into this place. Big tvs and lots of room. Location is unbeatable as it is perfect to getting to downtown Gettysburg or going on the battlefield auto tour. Host was a prompt with responses when had questions.

I did not get any info on how to check in. I called Vrbo and they assisted my wife. My fault, I should have got in touch with the property owner before I had left. The cabin was how it was described in the info. We had a good time. Good location for seeing Gettysberg

Cannot say anything bad. Would have liked a recliner for the evenings lol. Was very quiet. Was very cool historically. I do not go out of my way for any paranormal experiences. Was not my motive. I am not really a believer in that kinda thing though I like being in places where a lot of people have passed though and have a passion for history and like to pass through the spaces those before have dwelled and enjoy in being in those same footsteps. I have also been in building construction all my life and career and enjoy seeing how things were constructed and renovated. Place does a really good job with leaving paperwork in drawers etc of the properties history. Take the time to go through it. I was not snooping for anything while I was there but decided last day to open some drawers. Do that day one. Not last day like me. Nice stay.

Our weekend stay at the Historic Rainworth Lodge was Awesome!! We were in town for The Battlefield Bash & to explore Gettysburg. We stayed July 15th-17th for 2 nights. Our host Daniel was great!! He was timely with responses to questions leading upto & during our stay. We received our check-in message and when arrived , Daniel was just finishing up at the lodge making sure everything was ready for.our stay. He was kinda enough to give us a walking tour of the house and share information pertaining to the homes rich historical past even though we reviewed the listings Vrbo/Facebook page, which shares an abundance of information. Also please be sure to read Daniels detailed post about the property and grounds being as natural as possible. The Home was built in the early 1740s/1750s.
Thank you Daniel
We look forward to future stays!!

The house is quite welcoming inside and nicely appointed with period-style furnishings. It was extremely clean and quiet, despite its proximity to the road. The wooded area near the house provides a nice barrier to the road and the yard feels quite private. There is a definite feel to the home of having "otherworldly" guests, but there was a vibe to the place that was not at all menacing as in a previous review. I loved it and would stay again. Got some very interesting videos!!
The owners were immediately responsive to any inquiries I had and we had no difficulty finding the home or getting in. My understanding is the owners have recently acquired the property and have done a lovely job with the interior, having noted in the description the exterior needs work. There was an adequate amount of plate service for our needs, but if we were to have a house full, there might need to be some additional items for cooking. If that's the only negative I have about the home, then its a win for me!!

This house in Gettysburg is an enchanting blend of history and charm. The original cabin structure (serving as the main room) instantly captivated me and my husband. It was like stepping back in time.
The added touch of being haunted added a thrilling dimension to our stay. While I didn't encounter any ghostly apparitions, the eerie atmosphere created an unforgettable experience, especially during the evenings.
The house offered modern comforts alongside its historic allure. On three of the sides of the house was forrest and beautiful nature. In the morning, it was great to go out and drink coffee to watch the deer and birds.
The owners' communication was exceptional, providing detailed information and ensuring a delightful stay. The house also provided easy access to Gettysburg’s rich history and attractions, making it a perfect base for exploring the area.
In summary, this house offers a great getaway. Its blend of history, charm, and natural atmosphere creates a truly memorable experience.
A HUGE thank you to Daniel Bonner (and family) for making this house available to the public!

I rented house w/ understanding of historic w/ "some" spiritual energy, just like my own house. Upon arrival we realized house had very different feel than what was advertised...we checked out house before taking any luggage inside. Once inside we explored house & became extremely uneasy. I had a horrible feeling of dread & felt as though I needed to get out asap & not return. I can sense energy but my friend, who was with me, is a medium. She told me it was the most evil house she has ever been in & didn't want to expose her 11 y/o daughter to this negative entity. She described the bedroom, just outside 2nd floor balcony as a portal to Hell. While outside debating on where to stay (we decided not to stay here) we heard a very loud banging on the upstairs BR window--we got out of there immediately. We spent 15 min on the property ...owner refused even partial refund. I guess when you're pimping out demons to the unsuspecting you need all the money you can get! (lol)
In seriousness, if you are the least bit concerned about sharing space w/demonic entities...don't stay here. I would never bring a child/pet to this property. Other observations ...some kit. & bathroom cabinets hanging open, kit. garbage can was placed on top counter, lights seemed to not consistently work. Inside space had an OPPRESSIVE darkness. Please be careful at this property; this energy is dangerous. Owner offered us to stay later in year-- I couldn't be paid enough to stay here.

Although we did not experience any paranormal activity that stood out, our trip was very interesting. We loved the books and journals that were there to read and the property was outstanding. The host was prompt with all of our questions and very professional.
