Upper Hamlin Lake Cabin
If you're looking to truly escape from it all while connecting to nature and making memories with your family, The Lazy Bear is the perfect fit and now offers Wi-Fi. This secluded cabin is located in an old growth forest on the northern shore of Upper Hamlin Lake and is within a mile of the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Preserve. The Nordhouse Dunes is 3,500 acres along Lake Michigan's eastern shoreline and is great for hiking, camping, beach combing, picnicking and observing nature. It offers approximately 10 miles of trails and can be accessed at the Nurnberg Trailhead, just minutes from the cabin. Access to the cabin requires travel on a gravel road and a federal woods road(two track).
The historic districts and downtown life of Manistee and Ludington are a 25 minute drive in either direction.
This artisan cabin was recently built by the hosts using cordwood construction techniques. Enjoy the 17 acre property that borders the Manistee National Forest and affords unique wildlife sightings, fishing, hunting, and hiking. This area is well known for whitetail deer hunting and is very near the flight path of migratory waterfowl over Hamlin Lake. Enjoy views of the lake from just outside the cabin and find ease launching kayaks, canoes and the rowboat at the dock along the lake frontage. The frontage is not suitable for docking motor boats, but the Hamlin Lake Boat Launch is only a few minutes from the cabin. The cabin is positioned at the top of a gradually sloped hill and the lake frontage is located approximately 75 yards from the cabin. Access to the frontage will require walking down trails along the hillside.
The Lazy Bear offers an open layout living and dining area with a lofted ceiling and a fully equipped modern kitchen. The full bathroom offers a clawfoot tub and shower. The master bedroom offers a full bed and the large loft space has two twin beds and a queen Aerobed.
This unique cabin was designed with a modern rustic interior. The woodwork was sourced from the building site, e.g., cherry trim and maple ceiling. Firewood is provided for the woodstove and can be supplemented by electric baseboard heating.
Guests have full access to the cabin and property, including 5 single kayaks with paddles and life jackets. The lake frontage is not suitable for swimming due to the vegetation that grows along the frontage and throughout the surrounding water. Other amenities include a firepit, gas grill and outdoor seating.
Pets Allowed (2 pet max). Pet fee(s) of $50/pet will apply No Smoking No Fireworks No large events No Television (cellphone reception is good with most providers)

Fantastic location, very secluded and private, just what we wanted. Great hiking options close by. The only 'complaint' is the bed in the master. Would expect at least a queen bed ; a full bed is challenging for 2 adults. The mattresses of the beds in the loft area can use an upgrade as well. Otherwise, loved loved loved our stay!!
We really enjoyed the cabin and beautiful property.
This was probably the most relaxing vacation we have
ever had. Total privacy, we did not hear or see anyone.
It was a great place to unwind and recharge.
The home is beautifully built with a library of naturalist information... a quiet location with plenty of room to think and enjoy time with those closest to you.
We loved this cabin! Relatively 'safe' for our toddler and there was so much to do in the area together! We will definitely vacation here again. I would recommend bringing your own pillows, and the mattress is fairly firm.. we felt fully at home here otherwise.
We loved being surrounded by nature and we loved the unique design of this cabin. It was so peaceful in the mornings to sit on the hill that overlooks the water. We saw deer daily on the property. We loved the quiet. It is a perfect place to get away from our busy and noisy lives.
It was exactly what we wanted. A little cabin in the woods! It was very secluded and private. Also very clean. Better than the pictures!
We enjoyed walks in the woods, nightly fires, and it was a short trip to the beach. The kayaks was a bonus as well as the pre-cut firewood.
Will definitely go back!

Decent weekend getaway
Location was great for a quite, secluded getaway. The house is super cute and beautiful views of nature. The kids had a wonderful time fishing on the dock. Couple downfalls were that the dock was a bit farther of walk than pictures show. Not a big deal but not fun when lugging a 1 year old up and down the hill. When we arrived I was a little concerned about the house being unlocked and my wife had to sweep and clean a few things before we could settle in. Overall it was a decent getaway and time for family bonding.
We loved this property so much. It’s buried deep in the beautiful mature woods. Our family was so impressed with the structure of the cabin, built with logs and the natural wood details throughout the house. We loved that there were no neighbors that we could see and all we could hear were the sounds of nature or an occasional boat traveling through the lake. The kayaks were very much appreciated to explore Lake Hamlin. Get up early and watch the sunrise over the lake!
There were also so many nearby beaches to explore all within a very short drive. We visited Nordhouse Dunes and Magoon Creek Park (both breathtaking), and 5th Avenue Beach (family friendly with a playground) and loved them all! We also visited Orchard market recommended by cabin owners and bought some delicious homemade goods.
We loved our peaceful stay and the opportunity to explore the nearby beautiful beaches. Thank you!
Loved the property and everything was clean and cozy. We didn’t spend a lot of time by the water as we had a pup in recovery from surgery, but we did walk down a couple of times and it looked like it was set up for a lot of different water activities. We loved the kitchen, open space, loft area and the outdoor space. We were looking for a trip that was secluded in the woods and we got it! Would definitely recommend to others, but be sure that you’re okay traversing up and down hills as there are a few. There wasn’t a microwave or dishwasher we could find, but we didn’t need it, and the grill already had propane hooked up, so we didn’t need to bring a lot to enjoy our time away. We’re already thinking this will be a nice place to visit again this spring. Overall - LOVED the property and communication with the hosts were easy and quick. Can’t thank them enough for allowing us and our pups to stay. ☺️
I would like to share the exceptional experience we had during our recent guy's weekend stay at your property. It exceeded all our expectations. The modern kitchen and barbecue area were particularly impressive, catering to our love for cooking. We also found the house to be impeccably clean, remarkably spacious, and thoughtfully designed. The excellent Wi-Fi signal allowed us to stream movies and a football game nicely with our little portable projector. The secluded, wooded property offered the tranquility and privacy we desired, sparing us from neighbors and noise. We thoroughly enjoyed hiking and exploring and really liked the meandering path leading to the lake. Additionally, one of our friends brought his dog, who greatly appreciated the freedom to roam. The sleeping arrangements were also ideal, comfortably accommodating everyone, including the ability to isolate the individual who snores in the main bedroom. The upstairs beds, in particular, were very comfortable. The fire pit area was a popular gathering spot, and we were grateful for the all of the firewood providedFurthermore, our day trip to the beach at the Michigan recreation area was delightful, offering beautiful dunes, minimal crowds, and an unspoiled environment.Overall, it was one of the most enjoyable weekends we have experienced in a considerable time, and your property significantly contributed to its success.PS - absolutely use directions provided. Overall a nice place in a secluded location.. loved the old growth forest surrounding the cabin . Enjoyed the naturalist reading material, and leaning about the process for the cordwood construction . I am emailing the property owners with small suggestions on cleanliness ..we could have used a small microwave for heating coffee and boiling water for
Oatmeal .. the shower was not safe with just curtain walls, and I forgot to pack a blow dryer .. The steep hill to reach the lake was a workout but we managed it a few times and collected kindling for fires on the return. We tried the kayaks but water levels were low and the wild rice was high so it was a challenge .. we got some laughs out of the effort. Please look for our email.

Please note that this review is coming from a retired couple in our late 60's in good health.
The property was very nice, clean, organized, well landscaped. The journey to get there was long and the location is secluded to the point of being a concern. In all fairness when we went back and read the description it does say how far away it is from civilization. That did not register with us and that's on us. But quite frankly we did not think any VRBO would be that secluded. We expected a couple other properties to be nearby. We had go 3.5 miles on Nurnberg road which is rutted to the point where we could only go 10 mph to avoid car damage. The forest road was dry and clear but if there is a heavy rainstorm you would need a higher clearance AWD/4WD vehicle. We had no clue where to go to find the dock and kayaks. Perhaps a property map could help future visitors. We did have one cellphone bar and were able to make calls. But in the unforeseen event of a medical emergency it might get dicey given the distance from anything.. I saw reviews where young families enjoyed it and if you are the outdoor type, enjoy hiking in rugged terrain, wilderness and being totally secluded, it's the place to be. Unfortunately,. just a bit too rugged for us.

It was beautiful there. So much peace and wonderful wildlife. The peaches off the tree were the best I’ve ever tasted. We had a Monopoly game contest going and reading about how the cabin was constructed was fascinating!
Perfect, modern cabin with all the amenities. Off the beaten path, so very quiet and relaxing.

listing says there is a TV. Sure would like to know where it is. Book when we got there said we were to put all dirty dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on when we left. Sure would like to find that dishwasher. That aside, sure would like to find the dish rags and dish cloths for handwashing and drying the dishes. The building is very nice, but not very clean (perhaps the people who usually rent it do not know how to wash dishes by hand. We had a couple rainy days and a screened in porch would have been great.

We couldn't find the house, the sheriff's deputy couldn't find the house, finally we ran into a neighbor who helped us find it. It was a lovely space a property for a getaway. The sleeping situation is odd, 2 twins, and an air mattress in the loft and a small double bed in the bedroom would make a cozy six people. It also is in need of a bigger dehumidifier that guests don't have to empty, being cement and half below grade keeps it cool, but also makes it musty. The leasing company answered any questions right away. We would stay again, but we'd probably bring our own air mattresses.
This vacation was definitely a favorite for our family. We loved the cabin, large property and kayaking on the lake. Our kids especially enjoyed looking for wildlife and catching toads. All essentials were provided (including ample firewood for the fire pits) and hosts were very responsive. We did have an issue that was immediately resolved by the hosts. The old air mattress had holes and also needed new bedding. After contacting the host about what we should do, we were surprised arriving back at the cabin after hiking as the new air bed and bedding were waiting for us at the cabin door. We were also initially concerned as this cabin has no air conditioning, but we definitely did not need it because of the cabin being built into a hill and the overall construction of the cabin. We opened windows at night and used a few fans (1 provided, but we brought a few more), and we were comfortable. Overall, we would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for some peace and a few adventures in the wilderness. We are already planning on returning in the future.
Beautiful home, serene and spacious. However: not very accommodating for people with a handicap. Nothing was mentioned about the hill the property was on. Unfortunately I was unable to use the kayaks and had great difficulty to get to the cabin due to the slope with wood chips to the front door. Should definitely be part of the advertisement for this cabin. Shower was also not accessible due to the high instep and lack of anti slip in the tub. Bath curtains were dingy, could use a wash. We believe it would be more cozy with window coverings in the evening so you are not looking at black holes. Other than that we did enjoy the area. If I had known about the accessibility of this cabin, I would have looked elsewhere. So please add this to your advertisement! Thank you for letting us use your place!
