A charming 4 bedroom townhouse, easy walking distance to Eymet village.

The house is a delightful and recently refurbished townhouse in a very quiet setting on a country lane but within a 5 minute flat walk of the bastide village of Eymet in The Dordogne, SW France.

The house comfortably sleeps up to 7 people with 4 bedrooms and 2 shower-rooms. There is a large and comfortable living room that leads on to a stylish and fully equipped kitchen with an adjacent dining area that can comfortably seat 8. There is reverse air conditioning throughout the house and on the ground floor, there are also two pellet burners.

The house has a fully enclosed, large garden with a heated 10 x 5m swimming pool and a covered dining terrace, furnished with stylish outdoor furniture.

The house is an easy 25 minute drive to Bergerac Airport or 1.5 hour drive to Bordeaux Airport.

There are lots of delightful and varied restaurant options in Eymet and the surrounding villages although there is nothing quite like going to the weekly local market to pick up your fresh produce, try the local delicacies or just have a wander and a coffee. During the summer months, this area of France has a great choice of weekly night markets offering a wonderful atmosphere – rows of tables and chairs and a great selection of stalls and vans with food and drink, and a few have live music and some often have non food stalls too. The dates vary from village to village but the local tourist offices will have all the info.

As in the rest of France, there are rural pathways between every vineyard that are open to the public. Walk out the front door and there are countless trails and pathways going in every direction. There are vineyards to explore, forests to enter, and an incredible varied rolling countryside all about. Great for the serious hiker/walker, but also fun for children to explore.

There are countless bike routes for day trips along peaceful country lanes through some of the most beautiful countryside of southwest France. There are villages to explore, restaurants to enjoy, markets to shop, all easily accessible by bicycle from the house. There are bike routes for all levels of cyclists, from families with small children to the serious road biker. At Goodturn Cycles in Eymet, they specialise in the hire of electric bikes - www.goodturncycles.fr.

For golfers, Château des Vigiers Golf Course is nearby. Château des Vigiers forms the centrepiece of a spectacular 27-hole golf course. The course opened in 1992 and was designed by Donald Steel, who is considered one of the very best “natural” golf course architects. Arranged in three 9-hole loops, giving three 18-hole combinations, the golf course was rated in the top ten courses in Southwest France. Other golf facilities include a 6-hole academy course, a covered driving range, practice greens and bunkers as well as resident golf Professionals, making Vigiers an ideal place to begin or improve your game. There is also a spa here and very popular restaurant - booking advised. www.vigiers.com/golf-dordogne-france.

Wine production in the Dordogne Valley is a major speciality and of course there is also wine from close neighbour, Bordeaux. To see what is available check out https://www.seedordogne.com/vineyards/.

A great way to see the best of the Dordogne valley is by boat. There are several companies that run Gabares, the traditional vessel of the area. Trips are combined with a locally produced lunch and visits to special sites along the river. It is a glorious day out. The Gabarre de Bergerac is on the Quai Salvette at Bergerac and is one of the more traditional vessels.

Other days out for the family can include Parc-en-ciel which is a family paradise, with its suspended walkways through the forest, its large animal farm and themed gardens. Situated near Villereal it is about forty minutes drive away. You could easily spend the whole day there. There is another Airparc at Perigord for those who are interested.

Village Bournat is another fantastic day out, situated on the banks of the Vézère at La Bugue, approximately an hour’s drive away. This park has recreated a village from 100 years ago. There are local artisans, a fairground of its time, restaurants and picnic sites.

Also at La Bugue is the Aquarium du Perigord Noir, the largest privately owned aquarium in Europe.

Bergerac is found on the northern bank of the Dordogne River, in the western part of the Dordogne department. It is among the largest towns in the region and is classified as a town of Art and History. The highlight of a trip to Bergerac is the old town - the area immediately north of the river, signposted 'vieille ville'. This part of the town has some lovely streets and squares to explore, and a variety of boutique type shops. The old town centres around Place Pelissiere which is a lovely square edged with cafes and restaurants and always full of flowers.

Visit the Maison de Vins de Bergerac in the heart of the old town. It is a beautiful old cloister dating back to the 12th century. If you are a wine enthusiast there is an exhibition showing the history of Bergerac wines and its thirteen appellations.

During the summer there are occasional concerts which take place in the cloister. It is a lovely setting for them and worth going if you get the chance. In December there is usually a small but excellent quality Christmas Market here with products from local artisans, particularly useful if you are doing some Christmas shopping.

After exploring Bergerac, you can take an organised boat trip - gabare - up the river (start from the car-park at the bottom end of the old-town) to see the town and the nearby countryside from a different perspective. (You can also take the gabare from villages further up the river at Beynac or La Roque Gageac where you will pass various villages and chateaux along the route).

If you are travelling to Bergerac with children there are various activities in addition to the many castles and caves of the region. On the Route de Bordeaux near to the large Leclerc supermarket you can find a Bowling alley, a Paint Ball centre, an outdoor Water Park and a little further down the road a go-karting circuit. There is also a large swimming lake called the Lac de Pombonne near to the centre of town. This has lifeguards in the summer and a kiosk selling drinks.
The whole area is rich and deep in culture. It is full of châteaux, abbeys, caves and gardens with museums telling the stories of ages past. The area around the Dordogne and Vézère has been described as the centre of prehistory.

There are over 1000 châteaux in the Dordogne area, although many are in ruins. One of the most noteworthy is Château Monbazillac, described as the “Gem of Périgord Pourpre”. It is classified as a Historical Monument (XVIth century). Château Monbazillac was built in the middle of the XVIth century on top of the hill overlooking the pleasant valley of Bergerac. The château combines feudal military architecture and the elegant early Renaissance style. Whilst visiting, you will discover the very interesting Museum of Wine and Vineyard, Museum of Furniture in Périgord, Museum of Protestantism and the “1001 Châteaux of Périgord”. There is a delightful restaurant next to the château. Other châteaux are Lanquis, Biron, Chabans, Castelnaud, Brantome and Milandes.

There are a number of beautiful abbeys worthy of a visit such as Brantome, Cadouin and Limeuil and also many geographical caves in and around the Dordogne. One special one is the Cave of the Grand Roc, located close to Les Eyzies. This area has been described as the world capital of prehistory. The Cave of the Grand Roc is embedded in a magnificent cliff overlooking the Vézère Valley, Grand Roc is described as an exceptional jewel. On the same cliff, is another exceptional prehistoric site: the Shelters of Laugerie Basse. There is also the Roque St Christophe, the oldest and largest cave site in Western Europe and Grottes du Roc de Cazelle where you can discover the life of prehistoric man.

We strongly recommend a visit from Eymet should include the world heritage site village and vineyards of Saint-Emilion (38km) with lovely Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along the quaint and narrow streets.

Finally, this description of Things to Do must include Bordeaux which is one of the fastest growing and exciting cities in Europe. It is well worth a day trip to visit La Cité du Vin, a new interactive museum dedicated to wines from across the world, to shop along Rue St. Catherine, to have lunch in any of the many wonderful cafés that line the streets, or just to wander through the streets of this magical city. The world renowned Bordeaux Opera House is home to many arts performances and is worth a trip just to look and admire. It is an hour train ride through beautiful French countryside from Sainte Foy la Grande, with trains running once an hour for most of the day. Lost in Bordeaux is a great website for exploring what is going on in Bordeaux.
