Situated on a quiet, single-track road leading into mixed woodland this little Victorian cottage, made of local Dalbeattie granite, nestles next to the owner’s home, and neighbours a wide expanse of National Trust meadow leading down to the sea.
There are numerous varied walks from the door. Turn right through the cottage’s small wrought iron gate and within two minutes you are on Rockcliffe’s beach, a mixture of sand, shells and rock pools with safe bathing and boat ramp. From here you can walk along the breathtaking cliff path admiring the rugged coastline and wildlife and observing the nesting cormorants, razorbills and guillemots on the cliffs and rocky stacks. Beautiful sandy beaches, distant views of the Lake District mountains and interesting smugglers coves make this a fantastic walk to Sandyhills, from where you can get the local bus back to the village or wander back through Dalbeattie forest.
Turning left from Craigrannoch Cottage, the acclaimed Jubilee path leads you through deciduous woodland to the village of Kippford with its little marina. After coffee and cake in the café with lovely views over the water or a meal and pint in one of the two village pubs, you can stroll back to Rockcliffe along on the lower coastal path detouring, if desired, to the top of the Mote of Mark for far-reaching views of the bays and headlands (and magnificent sunsets!).
When the tide is out walks open up in Rockcliffe bay itself and you can stroll along the natural causeway to explore Rough Island (out of nesting season), a National Trust bird sanctuary, and admire Rockcliffe from the sea. Rockcliffe is designated as a National Scenic Area in Scotland (NSA) and is also situated in the Dark Sky park so you can experience the amazing starlit nights when it is clear. The famous Seven Stanes mountain bike trails can be reached easily by forest tracks from the door of the cottage.
Craigrannoch cottage is ideal for your four-legged friend, off road walks to the sea, adjacent NTS meadow for lead free walks, no restrictions for dogs on local beaches and plenty of dog friendly cafes and pubs nearby. The cottage has its own private garden area with small picket fence which can be raised if necessary
With bike washing facilities and bike storage this is also the ideal place to stay for your biking holiday with local bike hire nearby. Other local facilities include an 18-hole golf course, fishing, sailing, kayaking and bird watching at nearby RSPB Mersehead. The historic towns of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse of Fleet are within easy reach, as are the local visitor attractions of Sweetheart Abbey, NTS Threave Gardens and nature reserve, Caerlaverock and Threave (approached by small boat) castles while local Screel, Bengairn and Crifflel offer hill-walking for the more energetic. Lovely, comfortable little cottage for 2 of us and our Labrador.
Lovely, comfortable little cottage for 2 of us and our Labrador. Handy for the Jubilee Path through the woods to Kippford, and just a short stroll to the beautiful beach. The cottage is well equipped with good pans and a decent cooker. Some kitchen scales would have been handy but we managed ok without. We very much enjoyed exploring the area, which was new for us, and I am sure we will return.
