It was a great place to stay, its something new and different, when i stayed me and wife were the only 2 people checked in, we meet the owner of the property got a tour around the place, the garden area needs a little TLC on the path ways but we didnt mine this it was nice, the owner is extremely happy nice lady she was upbeat and chatting each time she saw us made sure we were okay and check if we needed anything.
The room we had was amazing it had a rustic style look
Firstly we could not find the hotel, there were no signs on the main road and when we drove down this stone lane which said foot path we come to a Grey wood hut and still no signs.
When I found an open door and passed the bell and was greeted by a lady who I asked if I was in the right place.
Thankfully it was and was greeted and taken to the upstairs to the room.
Cobwebs and spiders everywhere in the room, shower and toilet, it’s ok if you like spiders.
Has a roof Terrace which was nice and unexpected.
No towels for guests.
Complimentary breakfast and tea/coffee throughout the day for guests to help themselves.
Overall was a nice stay but not a hotel it’s someone’s home.
We had a pleasant stay! Spacious bathroom although you need to mind your head going through the doorway. Kids room was a fun space but better suited for younger kids.

The owner stated pizza and bar would be available but they were jot. In addition there was a lot of building work happening during our stay which ruined the tranquil surroundings.
Booked as pictures looked nice on this website. Arrived and nothing like the pictures. We had to leave and find another place to stay.

Was very nice but wasn’t what we expected. For the price of a one night stay we were very disappointed. We expected a lodge as described but more of a b&b. We did get an upgrade due to the shower not working. The one blind you could see in through the side from outside so we just used a blanket over to give us a bit more privacy. Staff was lovely but we were disappointed and probably won’t stay again.
Arrived 1 hour before check in and it wasnt a problem. Was met by jon on arrival and he was fantastic. Helpful, friendly, lovely guy to talk to and nothing seemed to be a problem. We had a 4 week old baby with us and it wasnt a problem. Was shown to our room which was absolutely lovely. Clean, comfortable, cosy and lovely and warm with the under floor heating. A extra heater was also in room if needed but definitely didnt need it. The shower was great and bed really comfortable. Free netflix as well which is an added bonus. Log fire was on in the entrance which made is lovely and warm and also gave that more welcoming feel. The bar and food area wasnt open due to it being out of season so we walked to the local pub which was about a mile away. Breakfast was simple but great. A good choice of food was included. Would definitely go back again. Peacful, relaxing and tranquil. And jon was brillant. The only thing that we can say was a bit annoying was when we booked it said on booking to ring 24hrs before arrival. I tried all day ringing the number the previous day on the number provided and had no joy in getting an ansew. We finally received a text at 9.30 at night to say everything was fine. I understand people are busy. But communication could of been better. Apart from that absolutely loved our stay. Thank you
Absolutely loved this place. The decor was rustic, quirky with some steam punk thrown in. The atmosphere was relaxing and Helen and John were so welcoming and friendly. We were on our way to an event and we wanted to get our bearings in daylight as we would not be checking in until the evening so we popped in on the way. We were welcomed by Ocho the dog, such a handsome good boy!! There is some building works going on outside but don't let this put you off. I would love to see the place in the summer as there is a huge firepit and pizza oven outside. The only downside we had was that we only booked for one night, something that we plan to rectify in the summer! I'd just like to say thank you for making our weekend away an amazing one. :

Lovely gentleman that owes the lodge however there was a lack of communication to my email that I had sent a month before our stay no one had got back to us, they did let us have a late check out by 2pm for £10 rather than £15 as I raised the matter of no one getting back to us.
Regarding the room it was quite cold at night and there was a small heater to use but still was quite cold, there is not any hangers to hang your coats/dresses/suit up there was just some shelves, the tea facilities are in the hallway when you enter the property so you would have to go out there to make tea if you fancied one. Wish our room was slightly bigger where a table and chair could have fitted. One thing I would like to also mention is that the reception was very bad and the property was not sign posted so we missed it first and had to turn back. It’s very dark area hard to find and the road to the property had a lot of pot holes so drive carefully.
On arrival host was unclear of our booking, the room was much smaller than anticipated and on the advertising 'photos they have moved and reused furniture and one photo is not even of the room the finishes were rough the wifi poor, open shower room toilet ? the lobby shown in photo was actually the breakfast room, which filled with smoke from pizza oven on two days, i had to suggest propping door to clear, but worst of all was the all night persistent humming vibration through the bedroom wall, coming from what sounded like and old freezer motor kicking in, did not sleep for two nights left on the third day as needed some peace and quiet. there was a bell to ring but did not seem to work, the host were very friendly and polite which I cannot fault , but in respect to the accommodation and situation everything was too laid back, this is a rental property charging upper rates not there home, all in all disappointed as did not want to be and feel let down and out of pocket, which I regret as was my wife's birthday and the whole eco eclectic thing was right up our street but unfortunately not the experience I was expecting
When you arrive, the driveway is just a dirt road. No covering. Full of potholes and water. The room is pokey. Some parts haven't even been finished. The bath overflow was missing. The bathroom 'door' consisted of a bookcase which slid round and which you couldn't close properly so no privacy. The wall decoration included plastic plants and leaves. Timber was loose or not even fixed. The beds were really uncomfortable. There was no wardrobe, just a hanger behind the tv. There was little in the way of soundproofing. We could hear people coming up the stairs and talking. Early in the morning the people next door turned their television on at 7.00am and we could hear it clearly. Not happy at all. The area was nice and we will be going back again but certainly will not be staying at this place.

Maybe to early in season no bar open but didn’t tell us prior, have to drive to get food and drinks. Room lovely but finish could be better, Lots of cobwebs, dirty extractor fan. Doing work outside and looks like it’s a good place for families glamping experience.
Lovely lady and really nice room but only heating was a small plug in heater , I was freezing. No hot water in the morning for a shower , no hairdryer . Wifi was very weak.
Shame as a lovely place but won’t be staying again .
Jon was the perfect host and made a proposal weekend that’s little bit more special - even sourcing and booking the restaurant. Please don’t be put off by the outside appearance of the building itself- inside is a different story and with a host like Jon it makes for the ideal get-away! Thanks Jon!
The happy couple
The accommodation was very quirky and I think would come as a bit of a shock to anyone not used to camping. We stayed in the Forest Store and we had a comfortable stay, but we are pragmatic people and just get on with it.
Our main concern was the wobbly bath that wasn’t plumbed in properly. Trying to wash our hair in there without so much as a hand held shower head was difficult and anyone older than us might struggle. Also getting in an out of the bath was tricky as it was so high sided. Style over substance I think. A major concern is no plumbed in overflow. Trying to avoid getting water on the floor was therefore a challenge. Mopping up after our ablutions, not much fun. Filling the kettle in the basin again very awkward. High level cleaning does not appear to take place. The room, wardrobe section behind the tv was layered with spiders webs. The bathroom ‘door’ doesn’t completely close due to the moss walls obscuring it and even if you do manage to close it to, there is no door knob on the bathroom side making exiting very tricky.
The one bed head was fixed to the wall making it very difficult to retrieve something I dropped under the bed, and I found it didn’t appear to have been cleaned under there for ages.
The corridors smelt of grease too…I think this aroma was coming from the kitchen equipment.
There was a complete lack of signage. The track to the property is long, quite rutted and dark at night. At first we were unsure we’d arrived!
The Lodge Rooms are fabulous and absolutely spotless. We recieved a very warm welcome upon arrival. We had the most amazing breakfast al fresco overlooking the Forest of Dean. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and will definaely be back. We would 100% recommend staying there.

Different, basic plumbing, surprised not restaurant on site.
The location really was magical, not only the inside and outside decor but the fact that the forest of Dean is literally on the door step.
The hosts were fabulous and couldn't have been more helpful, including us in the 'build your own pizza' evening that was so much fun.
The bath in the coal shed was incredible and after a long day kayaking and walking, was just what we needed.
We look forward to staying again!
Paid £360 for a 2 night stay in 'The Retreat'. Lets just say the pics they have do them a REAL favour...until you get there
Before travelling we had a few questions, based on reviews we had read from previous guests. Over the space of 3 days we sent messages via 5 different means....finally getting a reply the evening before we travelled with the excuse 'it's a really busy time for us'. No matter how busy, a quick text or whats app reply to our message with a promise to get back to us takes 30 seconds. Left a feeling that the owners didn't care enough about an imminent arrival.
The 'what3words' proved useful to find the place....we dug this up ourselves from their facebook page as they still don't deem it neccessary to put some signage up at the end of, what looks like a track that says 'private no access forestry commission' so doesn't exactly scream it's the right track to take.
Parked up...no signage to reception...happened to be what turned out to be one of the owners on their way out who pointed us in the right direction.
'Check in' was rushed to say the least. Shown to the room, 'back' door to the room which was really close to the car to get luggage in was locked, keys missing and no attempt made to find them 'ah steps are a bit funny that way anyway'. So we had to haul our bags right the way around the entire site. One of the kids then found keys for us.
