Enjoy the rare experience of wandering through a stunning Renaissance church with few other people around, as you examine the decorative frescoes and religious paintings displayed in the Church of Girolamini. The grand and spacious halls of the attached library and the shaded courtyard of the monastery also offer the chance to escape the bustle of the city.
The church of Girolamini is actually built on the site of an old palace. This was demolished before construction started on the church in 1592. Although the building has undergone several refurbishments, it remains true to its original Florentine Renaissance design, with three chapels and a central nave. There is also a monastery attached, which contains an art gallery and a large, state-owned historical library.
The most impressive views of the church are from the Piazza Girolamini. Stand here for unobstructed views of the gleaming white marble facade and its graceful curves. Statues of the saints Peter and Paul by the sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino stand atop the church. Inside are a number of frescoes and statues by local masters as well as the impressive painting of San Giovanni Battista by Reni hanging over the altar.
Many say the most interesting part of the complex is next door in the attached monastery. Peruse the works of past Italian greats such as Ribera and Sermoneta in the Quadreria gallery, or admire the ornately decorated and spacious halls of the Library of the Oratorian Fathers. The largest hall, the Sala Grande, is particularly impressive.
All this surrounds a peaceful, tree-lined courtyard, which makes a great place to enjoy some lunch, or just rest a while before continuing your exploration of the city.
The Church of Girolamini is located across the street from the Naples cathedral on the Via Duomo. Admission is free. Note that the church is closed on Sundays.
