Halfway House enjoys a beautiful Riverside setting on the edge of the River Brathay with Ambleside just a five minute drive away.
Welcome to Halfway House – Your Historic Retreat in Clappersgate
Nestled by the riverbank in the charming hamlet of Clappersgate, Halfway House is a beautiful 17th-century property that offers a unique blend of history, comfort, and modern convenience. Located just 2 miles from Ambleside and a short distance from the stunning Langdale Valley, this former toll house is the ideal base for exploring the Lake District.
With its original features, lovingly preserved and highlighted through recent refurbishments, Halfway House brings together the warmth of a historic home and the comforts of today. Inside, you’ll find cosy spaces with all the essentials for a memorable stay, plus plenty of room for family and friends to relax.
Ground Floor
The heart of the home offers inviting spaces for relaxation and enjoyment:
Living Room: Unwind by the wood burner in this cozy living area, complete with a TV, DVD player, and CD player for your entertainment.
Kitchen/Dining Room: Fully equipped with an electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine, this space is perfect for shared meals. French doors lead out to the decking, where you can enjoy alfresco dining with beautiful views.
Bedroom 1: A comfortable bedroom featuring a king-size bed for a restful night’s sleep.
Bedroom 2: A cosy bunk room, ideal for children or additional guests.
Shower Room: Includes a shower cubicle and toilet for added convenience.
First Floor
Upstairs, you’ll find additional beautifully furnished bedrooms and bathroom facilities:
Bedroom 3: A spacious room with a king-size bed, perfect for unwinding after a day on the fells.
Bedroom 4: A twin room with two single beds, providing flexible sleeping arrangements for your group.
Bathroom: Features a bath, separate shower, basin and wc, ideal for a relaxing soak.
Comfort & Convenience
With oil central heating, electricity, bed linen, towels, and Wi-Fi included, Halfway House is well-prepared to make your stay comfortable.
Logs for the wood burner are available locally, and we provide a cot and highchair for young families.
The patio garden is a tranquil spot to enjoy the outdoors, complete with garden furniture.
There is a further garden area leading down to the river, children and dogs should be supervised at all times. Private parking for up to three cars in the drive.

This fantastic location is perfect for nature lovers, with a variety of scenic walks and cycle paths right on your doorstep. For those up for a scenic adventure, a walking path over Loughrigg Fell offers stunning views and leads directly to Ambleside, starting from just across the road.

To make your arrival as smooth as possible, we provide self check-in. You'll find a key safe located by the door, and we'll provide detailed instructions on retrieving the keys before your stay. This way, you can effortlessly check in at your convenience.

•Pets and children should not be left unattended in the garden due to the proximity to the deep river.
