Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Beautiful views of Lake Windermere. Lovely old fashioned hunting lodge. Lovely big room and bathroom with separate shower and bath.Breakfast was chosen from a menu but took quite some time for order to be taken and meal to be served. Cocktails in the bar are a MUST.
When we approached the hotel it looks a stunning country house. Lovely location. We were welcomed very nicely. We had a lake view room. On first appearance it was quaint old and looked inviting. As time went by it was obvious that the upkeep of maintenance was lacking. This was reflected throughout the hotel.
Our dinner in the restaurant came cold and my husbands potatoes were missing. The meal did not come up to the stranded advertised unfortunately. Service for breakfast was slow. I could go on and on but the point is that this hotel is expensive and the price per night doesn’t reflect the standard expected for a 4* hotel.
The positives were the staff were pleasant. The location was beautiful.
We had a wonderful stay for a family wedding. The staff were all so friendly and helpful and our room was beautiful. Would definitely stay again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
What a fabulous hotel … views amazing looking over Windermere , young staff lovely to see all very helpful and knowledgeable and the food was fantastic
Wished we were staying longer rather than an overnight stop on the way back from Scotland
What an amazing, unique property with bags of character, we stayed in the Langdale suite which was ideal as a dog friendly room.
Greg on reception was very helpful and knowledgeable, and a lovely welcome at breakfast from James.
Highly recommended for a quiet escape from busy lives..
The staff were friendly and provided an excellent service throughout our visit! The room was immaculate and the food was divine. We would certainly go again.
Exceptional customer service. Staff were very friendly and the hotel room was clean. Breakfast was good.Thank you for a great stay. Will definitely book again for next time.
Lovely 4 night stay. Very welcoming staff, especially Tom. Cleaner was brilliant - spotted our 25th Wedding Anniversary cards (we hadn't mentioned it) and she sorted a bottle of champagne for when we got back to the room (thank you!) View was great, even when raining and grounds are lovely too.

weekend stay at Holbeck Ghyll
The hotel is in a beautiful spot overlooking Lake Windermere and very peaceful. The breakfast was very good with a lot of choice and the cooked dishes were well presented.
We had an evening meal which was a bit pricey but good quality food.
We were in a lodge which was comfortable and warm but a few things need attention. The bathroom fan was not working for our entire stay and the washbasin had a huge crack in it.
Hotel changed my room to a lodge due to health reasons as a last minute. Couldnt have been any more greatful. The views and grounds were stunning. The staff where great and attentive. Cleaner added extra coffee and milk for 2nd night which was also a great and tidied the room to a high standard. Room was dated, however this added to the overall experience of peace and tranquilitiy which is what i was looking for.
****Highly recommend this hotel and will be visiting again ***
Beautiful location with stunning views of Lake Windermere. The room and bathroom were pristine. The decor was in the arts and crafts style. Restaurant food was very good and there was an excellent choice of fruit and cereals for breakfast along with superbly cooked and flavoursome items. Staff were kind and courteous and the overall service was excellent. Highly recommended. Will certainly come again next time we’re in the late district.
We booked Holbeck Ghyll as a special treat after two days of walking in the Lake District and were genuinely looking forward to it. The reality was a serious disappointment.
The room was in a poor state of repair: mould on the bathroom ceiling, rusted window frames, failing grout and sealant with black mould in the tile joints, and paint peeling throughout the bathroom. These are not superficial issues — they represent basic maintenance failures that should not exist in any hotel, let alone one at this price point.
We asked to speak to the duty manager and were told none was available. The staff member we dealt with had no authority to move us to another room or offer a refund. We also contacted Expedia directly, who were unable to reach anyone at the hotel either.
We had no option but to leave and book alternative accommodation at our own expense. The hotel has since refused to offer any form of compensation. We would strongly advise others to exercise caution before booking.

Disliked: Cleanliness
Holbeck Ghyll is is a lovely location and the main building is very picturesque.
We stayed in one of the lodges which unfortunately was quite tired and in need a of a refresh.
Water marks on the walls, a bit grubby, mould in the bathroom and a shower that did not drain well.
The staff were very nice, the bed was comfortable and there was no noise when we stayed.
Breakfast was okay and included in our stay.
If the hotel was cheaper, we would have over looked all these things. Additionally, we only stayed two nights so did not really have a chance to give the staff any of this feedback directly.
