The hotel is beautiful, great amenities and delicious breakfast with lots to choose from. The staff are so kind and friendly, helping you with everything you need. The down size is the location, which you can’t walk anywhere, you do need a uber/cab for everything. The pool is a bit cold, but for some they would say “refreshing”. Overall, we really enjoy our time there. Really great!!!

The staff was rude, entitled and disrespectful. The service at the restaurant was awful (with the sole exception of one waiter.) Alonso from the front desk was very disrespectful and their pickup staff mixed up our reservation for transportation and left us waiting for them in the middle of the night at the airport.

Great staff, always willing to help. Very clean room and a very big variety for breakfast which was excellent. Parking is very safe and so much to do in the hotel, from restaurants, pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, gym, live piano player every night and more.

I’ve genuinely never stayed anywhere quite like this—and not in a good way. This hotel is so far from 5-star, it’s hard to know where to begin. On arrival, there was just one person working at reception during what we were told is peak season. You’re forced into a single queue for everything—check-in, broken room keys, general queries—which meant a long wait just to get to the desk. Unsurprisingly, no one in the queue seemed happy. The rooms are incredibly dated—like stepping back into the 1970s. Everything feels old and tired, right down to a corded phone mounted on the bathroom wall. It’s not charming or retro, just in serious need of an update. Breakfast was completely average—nothing you’d expect from a hotel positioning itself as 5-star. The pool itself is decent, but it was so overcrowded that people were sitting on the floor due to a lack of seating. Towels also ran out and weren’t replenished, despite asking multiple times. At best, this is a 3-star hotel charging 5-star prices. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I would like to begin by highlighting some positive aspects: initially, the team was very efficient in managing the addition of two extra days to our reservation and the transportation from the airport. Likewise, the staff was always very friendly and did their best with the available resources and the obstacles they faced. However, I regret to inform you that the hotel does not seem to be prepared for peak season in terms of staffing, towel availability, and cleanliness. My husband is a very light sleeper, and although we requested a room change because our stay was for two weeks, we were placed on the fifth floor, in the room next to the elevator and below the lounge. The noise of tables and chairs being moved until 10:30 p.m. made it extremely difficult for him to rest, and we could not be relocated because the hotel was full. On the other hand, I had a serious health issue related to the breakfast buffet. I was recovering from food poisoning for four days; after temporarily moving to another hotel to rest, I became ill again immediately after eating at the buffet upon my return. Additionally, we experienced daily inconveniences with the towel service, as we had to wait until after 4:00 p.m. to receive them. Finally, we noticed that the pool area does not have enough shade or seating for the number of guests. I usually leave positive reviews about my stays, but this time the experience was

A beautiful stay from start to finish! Barceló San José was such a wonderful experience and truly exceeded our expectations. The property itself is absolutely stunning.. lush, well-maintained grounds that feel like a peaceful escape the moment you arrive. The pool area is gorgeous and inviting, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. The staff was exceptional.. warm, welcoming, and always ready to help with anything we needed. You can really feel the level of care and pride they have in making your stay comfortable. The airport shuttle was a huge bonus. reliable, easy, and took so much stress out of arrival and departure days. Such a thoughtful convenience! The restaurants were delicious, with a great variety of options. Every meal felt fresh and flavorful, and it was so nice having quality dining right on-site without needing to leave the property. Our room was beautiful, clean, and comfortable.. exactly what you want after long travel days. It felt like a perfect balance of cozy and elevated. And for everything you get, the value is incredible. This stay felt like a luxury experience without the heavy price tag. We absolutely loved our time here and would stay again in a heartbeat! 💛

Overall okay, but outdated in every respect; leaky shower doors, moldy smell, restaurant is overpriced, I would say a rip off, including the small shop in the lobby (paid $17 for two bags of chips). However, the biggest disappointment was the city itself. A sad place, filthy, nothing to see. If I travel to CR again, I would avoid San Jose as much as possible.

Our flight landed at 11:00 a.m., but the hotel’s free shuttle would not pick us up until 1:00 p.m. due to check-in time. After being awake since 3:00 a.m. and with nowhere to go for two hours, we took an Uber to the hotel so we could eat and rest. The grounds are beautiful, and most of the staff were kind and professional. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill once we reached our room. We were told no upgrades were available despite our Expedia VIP status. The assigned room had a strong, unpleasant odor, old dingy carpet, and felt very dated. After a short nap, I woke up with a severe headache and nausea from the smell. When we reported the issue, we were initially told we would need to pay for an upgrade. Thankfully, the manager, Brandon, was understanding and moved us to a room on the premium floor. The smell was gone, but the room was still dated, with a noticeable dip in the mattress. Linens were clean, and the view was nice. Food at the hotel was disappointing overall, though breakfast was acceptable and the café con leche helped. The lobby felt plain and lacked the atmosphere expected from a hotel that markets itself as five-star. Evening piano music was a nice touch, and drinks were reasonably priced. Housekeeping was inconsistent. After returning from a full-day tour, our room had not been serviced except for removed towels, and housekeeping knocked late in the afternoon instead.

Just don’t go… The hotel does not have many options for at resort activities. The pool area is nice. The options for dining is poolside restaurant, Japanese restaurant, and a cafe. The bar area seating is horrendous. The hotel wants you to primarily use room service. Had to ask for towels twice during the stay as the cleaning crew did not leave towels. Requested air port shuttle the day before our departure, the hotel said that they would call a taxi and we would need to pay for the taxi service. Ok, arrive downstairs and checked out of room, went to inquire about taxi. They told us that no taxi was requested m, and we would call UBER.. which uber is half the prices as the taxi in San Jose.
