This was one of the most exceptional stays I’ve ever had (including five star hotels). Casa do Santo is a truly hidden gem and I’m lucky we got to experience it before it grows in popularity. Maria and the staff are so attentive, helpful and welcoming, and Barco (the property dog) is an added bonus! If you’re looking to stay in the Douro valley in a cute, quaint town and want something relaxing and stunning, I couldn’t recommend this place more.

A few details to bear in mind

The location is really good (in the middle of the vineyards and with several estates in the surrounding area) and the place is new/fresh (note that you will not be staying in the charming building you see on the pictures). While the owners are nice, one of the staff members was really unpleasant (never returned our greetings - whether we addressed her in English or Portuguese -, sighing when performing her tasks around the guests). A few things to bear in mind: 1- for light sleepers: the rooms on the ground floor (standard rooms) 1 and 2 are opening to the check-in and breakfast area and the insulation is quite poor. You will be hearing the noise coming from that main room + the sound from upstairs rooms. 2- for people with reduced mobility: there are flights of stairs from the parking to the main entrance and then again to access upstairs rooms (no elevator).

Stunning property in a quiet charming village. We were greeted with a beautiful glass of wine made from their vineyard - after a day of driving it felt like entering a true oasis. The pool was beautiful and so was the scenery it overlooked. Everything was taking care of, from dinner reservations at the restaurant in town one night to an in-house delicious option on our second night. Breakfast was delicious too. I only wish we could have stayed longer!

Un séjour parfait dans la vallée du Douro ! Maria, notre hôtesse, est tout simplement fantastique. Elle prend soin de chacun de ses clients et rend chaque séjour unique ! The property was great for us. The hotel is well looked after. Our room was a good size and very nice. The lobby/reception area was very nice. We sat there a couple nights after dinner and enjoyed a nice glass of wine with a few other guests. Also a very nice pool area if you’re there in the warmer weather. Maria was very helpful and booked us a wine tasting and a river cruise. I would highly recommend this hotel. I would definitely stay there again.

If you are looking for a vacation location that will refresh your soul, this beautiful vineyard getaway is the place for you! Set in the tiny Village of Provesende, this gorgeously renovated stone hotel overlooks the gentle rolling hills of the Douro Valley. The hotel and working vineyard have long been in the family of the charming Manager, Maria Pinheiro da Veiga. She was an absolute delight to talk with and gave generously of her time and knowledge of the surrounding tight-knit community. We were particularly interested in some peace and quiet after almost 3 weeks touring Italy and Portugal and we found this location a balm for our travel-weary souls. Avid bird watchers, we were entranced by the beauty and impressive variety of birds we could see and hear clearly as there was virtually no traffic sound at all. After we arrived, we sat and enjoyed the beautiful birds for 3 hours before we heard one motorbike drive by. It was sheer bliss! And so was the food! We had the best traditional Portuguese meal prepared on site by their wonderful chef and served to the melodious tunes of Fado over the sound system. They have a beautiful swimming pool, but it was still too chilly to do more than sit by the water and enjoy the fresh air and simple beauty of a place almost untouched by time. Five Stars aren’t enough!
