South Side Slopes is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania`s South Side area. The neighborhood comprises the hills from the South Side Flats neighborhood along the Monongahela River from the Liberty Bridge (west) to beyond Josephine Street (east).
In many parts of the South Side Slopes, homes offer panoramic views of the city skyline that span the distance from beyond McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, to Homestead, Pennsylvania. Many homes are perched well above the city skyline. This neighborhood provides access to the South Side Flats by various means, including the many public staircases.
Every autumn the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association (SSSNA) hosts its annual `StepTrek`, where participants travel over the various public step streets. Pittsburgh, like many cities in the United States built on hillsides, classifies public staircases as streets. The hills being steep, staircases allowed access to the different parts of the slopes neighborhood. The SSSNA hopes to maintain the staircases as a legacy of its history as a mining town.
The Mission Street steps between Oakley Street and Barry Street in addition to the top of Yard Way off Pius St. offer views of the South Side Flats neighborhood and downtown Pittsburgh. These public staircases are sometimes called paper streets, being pedestrian streets shown on City maps but not accessible by vehicles.
South Side Park is a City Park with hiking trails, a small orchard patch and views of the City of Pittsburgh skyline. It is home to many species of birds, small animals and deer. It contains a small wetlands area, complete with cattails and many species of wildlife. Black locust trees form a mature canopy over the park. It also includes a community garden at the former Bandi Schaum baseball field on the lower plateau off Mission Street across from the Mission Street water pumping station.
A cor-ten sculpture representing the neighborhood`s topography and buildings is on display in the garden of Paul of the Cross Monastery.

My fiancé and I stayed here for our trip to Pittsburgh and absolutely loved it. We enjoyed how clean the house was and how close it was to downtown Pittsburgh while still off in a quiet neighborhood. We’d definitely look to book again if the house is available when we return!
Decor was modern and comfortable Beds very comfy Attention to detail was best in any rental property I’ve stayed- labeling, amenities (makeup wash cloth is a must) and kitchen appliances Driveway was a bonus on those narrow streets Highly recommend this property
Really enjoyed our stay in this home. Extremely clean. Perfect home for our group of two couples. No issues with the home at all. Enjoyed having the driveway to park in as well.
Great location, easy drive to the city or plenty of food nearby

We planned to have a quintessential Pittsburgh experience and the House on the Hill was the perfect choice. Every trip up and down to it was an adventure. Easy drive to where we wanted to be...museums, stadium, strip district, inclines etc. We enjoyed exploring the restaurants and shops on the south side. The actual house was modern, comfortable and equipped with everything we needed.
The stay was great, plenty of space awesome deck, great house layout. The only trouble we had was parking/ leaving the driveway we were in a large SUV and experienced some trouble spots when leaving and arriving back at the location. Regular sized vehicle would most likely have no trouble.
Glad I was familiar with driving in this area. The location was a short drive to shopping and restaurants. The drive to the property and parking ingress and egress can be challenging. Entrance was not well lit and should be cleaned/repaired. The unit was clean and well appointed. Problems with tv remotes. Could only get one to work for the husband. Next day lock would not activate as I was leaving for the day. Reasonable response time with batteries for the lock and additional remotes. None of them worked. Problem is that the tvs needed connection to internet. Need access to tv menu which could not be accessed with any of the remotes or tv interface. I am tech savvy and bring devices. No time for that. Everything should be working when guests arrive. Though unit was lovely; more attention should be paid to routine maintenance.
Location is great for accessing the city & lots of restaurants. The hosts communicate very well and the house has everything you need. It is a quiet neighborhood, but be prepared for steep alley type streets. It is very nice that the property has a driveway for 2 cars.
Lovely stay. The house over looks the city, beautiful interior and host was always available. Easy Uber all over the city and lots to do. Will stay there again if traveling there again.
My company had some work in Pittsburgh and we opted to stay at Sarah's rental. She was a fantastic host and had a great property. She was responsive, communicated all the check-in / out details clearly, and gave us everything that we needed. Would highly recommend staying here!
We had a nice visit here- the roads to get up to the house are not for the faint of heart but the view was nice from the inside! Well updated house and super responsive host!
This is a great property, recently remodeled. All the furnishings were very clean and new and has a nice patio. We used the pull out sofa bed and it was comfortable. It’s a top a hill with great city views and close to literally everything. We found great food and ice cream on Carson St. and a fun splash pad for my kiddo at Arlington Field. Neighborhood is safe, friendly neighbors, and many homes are getting revitalized. Sarah, the property manager was very helpful and responsive whenever we had a question.
This is a spotless, 2 floor apt, 2nd and 3rd story on the slopes overlooking the Southside. The 2nd story has an excellent eat in kitchen with a bonus Air Fryer. The furniture throughout is sturdy and clean, the beds and linens very nice. Roku TVs everywhere you look! Outside the designated parking space along side the house was great for unloading the car and felt secure. The back deck was our place for morning coffee. The view is in the front through the bedroom windows. There are steps with a good bannister to enter the apt in the back and another inside flight to go to the 3rd floor bedroom suite. It's a classic Pittsburgh hill house in that regard. This is a residential area, but we walked up to the fantastic Hilltop Coffee shop and had an easy drive down the hill to 2 large grocery stores and the lively Carson Street action. Check in was keyless which was very smooth. Communication with one of the owners, Sarah was friendly, prompt and helpful. Sarah and Robert have clearly done a lot of work to modernize this apt (electric outlets are everywhere) and they care that you have a good experience. Hope to stay here again when we are back in town to visit family.
Robert and Sarah were very accommodating. we had a couple small issues in the beginning but they were handled very quickly and professionally.
The reason I gave the location and neighborhood a three star instead of a five is because we live in a different state where all the roads are flat. Everything in PA is very hilly and sharp, steep turns. So for us that was the downfall, however if you’re used to PA then it should be fine! Overall I would highly recommend both Sarah and Robert and any other properties they have to offer. Thank you to both of you for all you did for us!! You were both wonderful!!
This home is in a very convenient location to many of the key sites in Pittsburgh! Other reviewers talk about the hills, and there were hills, but that is what provides such a wonderful view of Pittsburgh. The rooms were clean and spacious and driveway parking was good for two cars. One caution is that the stairs to the second bedroom are steep but they reminded me of my mom’s and grandmother’s homes. No problem unless you are someone with balance issues.
We were in town to go to a Steelers game and enjoyed our stay at this property. The house is located on some pretty steep one lane hills but we navigated without issue. Sarah was very responsive to our requests. The recent roadwork in front of the house was just about complete when we were there and it didn't cause us any issues getting in and out. Traveling to and from the center of Pittsburgh was easy and the south side slopes bars and restaurants were great.
It was a beautiful area and we loved the view! The home was also beautiful. Only complaint was the Mon-Fri construction we were not informed of. Was quite and inconvenience. Other than that it was perfect! Thank you!
Really nice interior. Hard to navigate the weekend we were there.
Beautifully renovated house. Location is ok but the weekend we were there, it was impossible to get around. Almost every road was closed for construction. Couldn't park at the property or get uber rides because of this. Not the owners fault but a pain i wish i knew about. I would recommend this property despite this.
The property was absolutely stunning! Communication with the owners were easy and they were always immediately available if needed. Some reviews complained of the narrow roads, and although they were tough, they were 100% manageable. We will also check to see if there is availability here if we visit again
