Between stays at Disney Aulani over on O’ahu and Hilton Waikoloa Village on our honeymoon, my Wife and I stayed at Blue House. Having totally never been to Hawaii, we wanted to experience the state in a few different ways.
Blue House was a great base for exploring the Big Island’s rural south region and accessing the East side of the Island. From here, we drove to / hiked to Papakōlea Beach, and took drives up the East Coast to Akaka Falls State Park and Hawai’i Volcanoes State Park. We were fortunate that Myra recommended we stop at Punalu’u Bake Shop, their pastries and coffee were fantastic.
One of my favorite aspects of Blue House was the deck facing the Pacific Ocean and the Grill out back. Enjoying the Pacific breeze, grilling burgers and kebabs, and having a Kona Big Wave in the evenings was peak relaxation after all our adventures. The sunsets are amazing from the property, and watching showers blow by out on the Pacific is pretty cool.
I recommend, assuming if you’re booking a stay here you’re probably going to be flying in and renting a car, stock up in Kailua-Kona at Walmart before driving down to Ocean View. The small markets in Ocean View are great for fish, meat, produce, things you need fresh, etc but have somewhat limited variety in things like coffee, snacks, etc.
Thanks for the great stay and the memories Myra and Dan!
