This was our first rental with VRBO and was a learning experience which we wanted to share for potential benefit to others. Cost: what shows on the website is not the cost we paid. We did not realize the extra fees and how high they are until too late to cancel. Had we known 3 nights would actually cost double the rate on the website once fees were added, we would not have booked it. When we received the email with the total cost, cancellation would have given us only 50% back because of the date, so we thought we’d try it anyway. Location: being outside of town and by the pictures, we expected a rural setting but it was actually a very busy road and lots of traffic sounds especially in the morning. Trucks. We should have driven street view before we booked and we would have known this. We did not expect that “Dog friendly” meant that the place would smell like dog as soon as we opened the door and there was dog hair on the outside chair cushions. Kitchen area was quite clean except for mouse droppings under the stove where you have to go to turn on the valve to use the stove, but the shower floor needed to be cleaned better along the wall edges that looked like either mildew or dirt and there were mouse traps under the bathroom sink. There are few outlets and we had to unplug appliances to charge our devices. The light in the bathroom was a pull string above the sink and hard to find if you arrive after dark as we did. We have stayed in cabins in the woods and in the countryside and expect some sacrifices for the setting. For us, this had the sacrifices without the benefits we had hoped for in a quiet, country setting. We paid for 3 nights and left after 1. We will be extremely cautious about ever using VRBO again.
