A region often claimed to be the “real Italians’ Italy,” the province of Reggio di Calabria has not yet being overwhelmed by tourism. Discover little-known but lovely hill towns, explore a world-class museum packed with ancient artifacts and hike in mountainous parks.
The province’s biggest city, also named Reggio di Calabria, is a simple port town. Many travelers pass through here on their way to nearby Sicily, located on the far side of the Strait of Messina. Inspect the fascinating collection of Greek and Roman objects at the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, also known as Museo Nazionale di Reggio Calabria. Walk along the Lungomare Falcomatà admiring views out across to the smoke-spurting Mount Etna before sampling typical Calabrian dishes, such as ciambotta (a hearty vegetable stew) in a local restaurant.
The province also has many quaint small towns and villages. Visit Scilla, a picturesque fishing village with a pretty beach and the impressive Castello Ruffo atop a rocky outcrop. Sitting prettily on top of a hill on the Ionian side of the province is the photo-worthy medieval hill town of Gerace. From its advantageous hilltop position, look out toward the blue Ionian Sea and the mountainous interior.
Though no longer populated, the ghost town of Pentedattilo on the southern coast is also a fascinating daytrip destination. First settled by the Greeks, Pentedattilo was inhabited up until an earthquake in 1783, which saw many of its residents flee their homes. Wander the eerie, empty streets surveying the deserted buildings and churches.
For outdoor fun, explore Parco Nazionale dell'Aspromonte, which encompasses mountains, rivers, forests and charming towns such as Gambarie. Stroll along walking trails or attempt to summit the highest peak, the 6,414-foot-tall (1,955-meter) Montalto, which is marked by a bronze statue of Christ.
Find the province of Reggio di Calabria at the southern tip of mainland Italy, at the toe of Italy’s boot. Fly into Reggio Calabria Airport, just south of the city or into Lamezia Terme Airport, which is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) away.
