The Corinth Canal is a lockless shipping channel in Greece. The channel is 6 kilometers long and 8 meters deep. The history of the construction of the canal is very curious. In November 1869, the design of the canal was entrusted to the Hungarian architects Istvan Türr and Belé Gerster, who had previously prepared the design for the Panama Canal. On May 5, 1882, the construction of the canal was started by a French company, which stopped working due to financial difficulties, and did not finish the work. The Greek company, led by Greek banker and philanthropist Andreas Singru, picked up the project and completed the facility in record time. The operation of the canal began in 1893.
Now the channel has partially lost its economic significance. Due to the narrowness of the waterway, large ocean vessels, the width of which is close to 20 meters, cannot pass through the canal.

"great place to stay. 7 minutes walk from the main strip of bars & restaurants yet away from the noise. lovely views from the sea facing rooms, superb secluded gardens with the sound of rippling waves. efficient, if ancient, lift. older rooms (but including bath tubs) but well appointed- huge variety at breakfast, easy parking right outside- thoroughly recommended "
